Agreed. Every elected position should be 4 - 6 years, one-and-done. That's long enough to get things done, with knowledge that you better do it right this time because after that you're out. Career politicians are the worst. Get in, get it done, and either move up to the next job, or GTFO.

It's still just a bandaid that won't accomplish much if anything in the long term.

If they aren't listening to the people now, they especially won't listen when they don't have to worry about re-election.

A lot of this has to do with voters and the way our voting works. With a 2 party system, and a solidly single party run state, there's no incentive for the politician to listen because the people just vote against the alternative.

At the end of the day, politics have become far too de-localized to be accountable to the people who need to hold that power.

Term limits and no retirement would do a lot to fix this issue in my book!!!!!!!
Add automatic tax audits for federal politicians. No state or federal politician, family member, or staffer should be allowed to invest in individual stocks in the market. Mutual funds only, just like almost every company sponsored 401k everywhere.

It was suggested to me once that, at least for congress, it should be a lottery system. If your number comes up, you have to go serve the people via representation. No frills, no life-long bene's. Once your term(s) end, you move back home and resume your private life. Interesting idea albeit not fully developed.
