Daughter's MIL had abdominal pain yesterday, bad. Went to the ER at EGH. When she described her symptoms, nurse said, it could be your appendix.

She sat for hours amongst the morons waiting to be seen for non emergency care. Most of whom will never pay dollar one for the care they'll receive.

At the 4 hour mark, she was finally taken to a room.

At 5 hours, she got the CAT scan.

At 6 hours she went in for an appendectomy. Somewhere between the CAT scan and surgery, her appendix had burst.

Now she's in for an extended hospital stay that even with her insurance is sure to cost thousands.

    Nah.

Just no monetary incentive to be prompt. A simple case of dragging your feet can sometimes be profitable.

Medical Insurance has Contracts for Specific Services / Drugs at Agreed Prices -
Which is why the big In-Network rule

yet when I ask How much will it cost? ... the reply is can't say until we submit & get reply from Insurance
Sorry for being late to the party but on this one... the insurance company likely has a set price for that drug. It does not matter what your pharmacy wants to charge for that drug, the company will pay what it wants to and charge you your portion of their price. If it costs $50 at the pharmacy but your insurance wants to pay $200 for that drug and your portion is $60...well that's what the pharmacy has to have you pay. Ask them what it would be for you to NOT use your insurance and pay this one as a cash or Self-Pay patient.

GoodRX is a great source for many, and there's another website called NeedyMeds.org that may be helpful.

It goes against everything that the medical system "used to" represent, yet today IMO if people are told this and disagree, they're naive at best.

Im reposting a video from my post #55. He stated exactly what you did at 3:37 of 8 min video, saying "pretending not to understand your medical problems is now the most profitable techniques of any medical practice. They tell you, you need more tests, more medical exams, specialists....."

Acute medical care can and will save your life. Standard medical practices, checkups, etc, are profit driven. Insurance is a scam. If that's not the case then it's time for another fake PCR test and the chaos that follows.

I've had family members tested into an early grave. It's real. Create a problem, offer a solution and get control/profit. Caveat emptor.

We have been trying to get a home health aide to help with my mom and is it hard to find. The companies we talked to have been friendly and helpful, but are short on staff and can't give us the coverage we need.

Even tried to find a nurse who is looking for a simple side-hustle and are coming up with zeros. We'd make it worth their time, but nobody is willing/able to help.

My exposure to this with the elderly neighbors in recent years is that you'll want nanny cams. Neighbor lady had a lot of sketchy "aides" from her service before finally landing on a diamond in the rough, just prior to her husband passing. I got called to go "stop by for a visit," more than once.

It was during covid, but there seemed to always be some excuse for something less than professional.

It is extremely difficult to find people to do that job for anything approaching what the market thinks that labor is worth. Thus, you get Amazon driver quality.

There's an almost direct historical relationship between the cost of healthcare and the degree of .gov involvement.

Most recently, I remember the big jump the year after Obama-doesn't-care went into effect.

But not for every procedure. And even then, you may have to wait months to be seen.

When I was in high school, we had a German exchange student living with us. One day, he sliced his arm open. I took one look and knew it needed stitches so I drove him to the ER. He got signed in, and then had to wait, bleeding all over the floor for a half hour. They finally took him back and stitched him up and he was out in about 20 more minutes.

We got to my car, and he was amazed at the hospital. He said in Germany, he would have been waiting for 8-10 hours to get seen.

I know a girl in Sweden who needs some emergency treatment for some of her girl parts, and her appointment with the surgeon is in 8 months!

Yeah, it's "free," paid by their exorbitant taxes, but there's no sense of urgency to handle patients.

I havn't read this whole thread yet, but wanted to add:

I have distant relatives in England that fly to Malaysia for their healthcare. Fly to USA for major procedures. They can't/don't wait for socialized medicine. Not so nice for the regular folks who can't afford to jet-set around the world.

Real sad that USA is being forced down the socialized path. I would have been retired 5 years ago, if not for Obamacare. As a business owner, it's cost me upwards of $350k more than I would have spent under the old system, even accounting for increases in the old system

I've never been more discouraged than when I was trying to find help so that my wife could get a day off of caring for her mom 24/7 for over three years.

It isn't good for your soul to know that you can't be free from that bondage until the person you love dies.

    Almost everybody complains about healthcare.
Doesn't matter if you're the leftiest of libs, or the most conservative Trumpian there is.

    1. It's expensive as all get-out.
    2. We're pretty much all gonna need it at one point.

Problem is, or should I say FACT is, (and this will tell you where I sit on the political spectrum) health care is NOT a God given... nor should it be a government protected... civil right.

It is a service provided (offered) to us by someone, and if we want that service... yup, we have to pay for it.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of government regulations that effect the cost of that service, as well as whet services they can (or can't) provide, and yeah, sometimes providers themselves can be downright greedy, so we need to shop around... but IMHO the WORST part of the whole damn system is the fact that the stupid government saw fit to stick their damn nose in it and try to manage it.

I get all my health care from the VA, so I know what I'm talking about.
Pretty sure that most of the people there WANT to help us vets out (or at least do their jobs well enough not to get fired) ... but the government system... Jesus H. Christ.

Yeah, my wife even complains about the co-pay with her insurance, but I say just get the damn government the hell out of the health care business.

    THAT'S the worst part.
Everything the government gets involved with, it screws up.
