When we saw photos like that in the 50's and 60's we were told that it had something to do with the structure being close to directly under the above ground blast. Some structures like smoke stacks survived because they had a minimal surface area for the blast to strike.
I guess it's like tornado damage that demolishes one structure and leaves the one right next to it unscathed.

I think that the second picture is probably not from Nagasaki. Nagasaki is hundreds of miles from where the brunt of the earthquake damage happened.
