I was thinking of some things that would be really useful to have for trade: wine, coffee, tobacco...vices in general.

Does anyone keep any items like this stored for long term SHTF situations?

Personally, I think I might get a couple of bottles of wine or whiskey to store away. If the event of a major societal break down it would seem like a bottle of whiskey could trade for something pretty valuable.

    Thoughts?

Good call with the books. If you were to run into a community of some sort, or even someone with a home location books would be a hot item. The nomadic types would probably not want to carry more than one or two around. Although, trading titles with a nomad sounds likely.

Also good call with the spices. Way back when, people would travel far and wide in search for spices and preservatives.

The mountain men of the 1800's put a lot of importance on tobacco, coffee and whiskey as their most valued "luxury" items. Things have not changed all that much, apparently.

Years ago one of my coworkers got transferred to an out of the way facility in Venezuela. On each trip back to Fort Wayne he would set down with bunch of catalogs and order underwear, socks, hygiene products for both men and women, buy tooth brushes and tooth paste, and purchase clothing to be taken back to Venezuela on the plane. Some of the most common items can be luxuries when you do not have them for an extended period of time...
