As I was telling samrothstein01 this past weekend at MDFI Carbine I, half of the enjoyment we get comes from actually shooting on the range, the other half comes from sharing it with other INGOers. lovemywoods will be the first to tell you how blessed he feels to have such a place, and that being able to help facilitate INGO events makes the upkeep worth it.

100 yards from a concrete pad on the side of my home. Same backstop is used for pistol.

I have a spot for 200 yards. But that requires me to be shooting up by my neighbors home. I call him first since its only 50 feet from his front door.

If they ever remove the state highway, I have a spot for a 2,000 foot range......

Dirt berms to treated lumber doors. They all work. Where can I get used bowling pins. I go through too many clays.

Husband and I stopped there while we were staying at McCormick's Creek earlier this week (we needed an adventure with some a/c on the way!). We were saddened by the obvious absence of any kind of target holder - it seems everyone just uses the trash can. :dunno: It is certainly nice and secluded, but the broken beer bottles didn't make me want to try any prone work, even with a mat.

Yes, you would have to be very careful shooting prone out there. I also prefer to park a good distance away from the benches. The lack of target holders is a down fall as well.

Just go to your local bowling alley and ask for some of their worn out pins. Some charge, some give them away.

This-- however, some lanes are now in the practice of sending off their old pins to be "refurbished", so they don't ever have any to give. Don't pay more than $2/pin.

I missed this thread entirely the first time around two weeks ago.

Here are two pictures of the steel plates that allow us to make casual shots off the deck. What esrice refers to as the ‘redneck’ range. It's a great way to relax, just go out and shoot a magazine and smell the gunpowder! :rockwoot:

I have three steel targets about 60 yards away from our house.

Here’s a closer picture of the steels. The red ones are mild steel. I’m shooting them until they get too cratered. I have some AR500 plates to replace them. The little 4” white square is AR500.

AR500 is the grade of steel or is there a preference. I have some 6"Dia x .312 thick 4140.

AR500 is best for rifle, and you can get away with AR400 for pistol. AR500 has a surface hardness of 2.5 times that of 4140 chromoly plate.

    I know a guy that sells AR500...

    The highlights-

    15 Truck tires
    7 Skid-Steer Tires
    8 ton #23 Sand
    3 ton #8 Stone
    100' Conveyor Belt
    10' Road Widener Belt
    Treated 6' Dog-Eared Boards
    ALOT OF SWEAT!!!!!!!!

Just got it finished, a little over-engineered, but I like it. Works great, can get 25 off the deck, and up to 50 in the yard.

OH, Man. Tell me that thing makes a "phsssssstttt" noise when the automatic doors open. Please don't take this as making fun because I'm impressed beyond description. If the Star Wars sound effects aren't an option maybe it could rotate horizontally and when it rotates underground a 3D model of your property comes up from the other side.
Sorry, I am a child of the James Bond era. I can't help it.:ingo:
All bizarre thread-jacking thoughts aside, that is the classiest range/berm idea I've seen yet.

EDIT/ADD: I would have to have ZbornacSVT Bobcat Steel - INGunOwners make me AR5000 steel sheets in the shape of those wooden planks and then paint them to look that way...I'm not that good of a shot.

I think I just got inspired to build one myself. Very nice!

For those of you with a range how close are your neighbors? If any. How tall are your burms? Are the burms fill dirt (rocks and all) or just sand (no rocks)?

Also, has anybody thought about using/building a Trap style backstop? I think it would be interesting to reclaim the lead and shoot it again! It would be especially easy to do for .22 only.

Here is my work in progress! The paper plate is for the kids and their air guns, the squares are steel at about 30 yards. Then at the back is two sycamore logs six foot tall and about two foot thick, they have six pie plates on them, their about 60 yards.

And this is how a real red neck does football, at the range! Lol.:D in the back yard.

My closest neighbor is about 300 yards away and not in the direction that I shoot. Other than the railroad ties the burm is all sand, no rocks. It is 6 feet tall. I only slow fire and keep the targets low. I plan on going a little higher next year.
