How this plays out at our house:

"Your husband and I have some unfini..."

    BOOM BOOM BOOM

"Joe, some guy needs cleaned out of the carpets. Could you take care of that? I'm tired."

amen to this...another thing I wonder what was the unfinished business the husband was into

I am guessing the intruders didn't know the husband at all. I would say they were trying to see if he was home also or not. When she said he would be home and they took off, that makes me think the possibility of husband coming in on the intruders doing harm to wife scared them off.

Yes she is very lucky nothing happened. Her husband is a nice guy, a farming family, so he isn't into anything bad. I'm with most of you I carry around my house because you never know. About 2 weeks ago our front drive buzzer went off; telling me something was in my drive. When I looked out the window I saw a guy get out of a green car, looks around then starts walking up my sidewalk. I run back and get my Ruger sp 101 from my man cave and when I get back to the window he is walking quickly back to the car and drives away. I think he saw the TV was on but that just goes to show you it’s always good to keep something on you or close by at home.

Thats hysterical. Im trying to get my wife to the point that she would be prepared to do this. I know that her having this second kid in Feb is gonna help alot.

Just picked up my first handgun. Definitely plan on using it to protect my wife and daughter from potential robbers and other unwelcome people in my home. Does not include in-laws :)

Your post, while funny (about the in-laws) is missing something. It's great that you got a handgun! :+1: But in this scenario, you would be the husband that isn't there. You need to teach your WIFE how to protect herself and your daughter from unwelcome people. She may however decide to protect your in-laws.

i agree with everyone else she should have been armed, a pet is not a replacement for a gun ,but it sure is a good first line of defense.my dog is bigger then alot of people and he better know you if you come stepping in the house.

I'd suggest that your friend get herself a couple of large vicious dogs, four large vicious dogs is even better.

4 would be hard even for 2 very determined intruders to handle.
I like the word Trained better than Vicious...
    Buy guns before pets.
Thinking my Dogs are pets is a first mistake a lot of People tend to make. My Dogs are anything but pets, do I care for them?! Yes I miss every dog I have ever owned. I find it amazing that a large number of people tend to treat their dogs like they are children, or better. Dogs can, if taught and trained properly, be a great tool to use.

I don't have much to argue with that, except that it takes dozens, if not hundreds, of hours to train a dog, depending on how smart you want them to be. My biggest "pet" peeve is animals who are allowed to jump all over anyone and everything, and bark so often that if there really was any trouble, the owners would ignore the barking because it is so routine. If people would spend a little time and teach them how to behave it would irk me a lot less.

I am right there with you!!!

I cannot stand a Dog that has no manners. I am a HUGE fan of the Schutzhund Training the Germans developed. It is no harder to train an animal than it is to teach a child...
Both just take time and patience...

+1. My Malinois is lazy as hell. He loves to get his belly rubbed. He will let the kids pull on his ears. He will also grab you by the throat and take you to the ground on command. He will release on command. He's my first line of defense and I trust him with my life.

Is it not a great feeling having a capable Dog with manners! ;)

+1 for dogs. Ours would never get aggressive but the advance warring she'd give of an intruder is worth her weight in gold.
I know friends of mine would never enter my house without the knowledge and permission of me and my wife. I know that my wife's first reaction would be to protect our girls and I would hope she'd react violently as needed.
I appreciate people sharing stories like this. I share them with my wife and we discuss "what if". I'd like to think it puts us in a better state of mind for reaction someday.

First off ,Im glad to hear that no one was hurt from the break in .Ive had my kids criticize my answering the door with my pistol either in hand or holstered at ready & Ive told them they are either an uninvited guest or a statistic as why you should own a gun .I am either carrying or have a pistol in reach at all times around the house.I hope they catch the creeps before their M.O. escalates to worse things.

My guess is that it's drug related.

No offense to the OP but thats what this sounds like.

Might want to read the whole thread before you start jumping to conclusions... :D

Exactly. That is why I took her to the range first day I had it, made her load it, and made her shoot it. She even got some pretty good shots in. She was not happy about having a gun in the house, but she it least is comfortable with the gun knows how to use it.
