Ok guys need some help, I've been cleaning my Mosin on and off for the past month letting it soak in Windex, Hoppes 9, used Never Dull, etc. still can't get all the crap out of it. I've scrubbed and scrubbed, even used hot water and soap, still getting dirty patches and dirty jabs of Never Dull. I let it soak for a week at a time still no luck. Any ideas or should I just keep at it. Keep in mind this rifle probably has not been cleaned since WWII. I will try anything at this point.

I'm assuming you mean the chamber area. If so, there are some You tube vids about polishing the chamber that are pretty informative, I'll see if I can find it, but it's been posted here.

No its the barrel, I cant get all of the residue out of it. It will not shine, I took tips from the thread accurizing the mosin and still can't get the son of a gun clean, I got the chamber cleaned with the drill and 12ga brush and even used the drill on the barrel keep getting carbon residue, patches and Never Dull keep coming out blacker than coal.

So shoot it once or a couple of times, then go and try again. This rifle is just a project but it is getting really aggravating lol, and the wife is getting tired of me spending time cleaning it instead of doing other things (aka her things) around the house.

I know what you mean,;), yeah, as long as it's just dirty, and there are no chunks in there, I'd just run a few rounds through it, then hit it again.

Autozone has aerosol brakes parts cleaner. That stuff will degrease anything most ricky-tick, it evaporates quickly, and it's cheap.

Hose that crap down the barrel and run a brush and patches through it. Repeat as needed.

It won't hurt your commie rifle, but you might wanna be careful about getting it on the wood.

If this method doesn't work, I'll kiss your ass.

    Also FYI:

Using Windex is chemically unnecessary. After shooting surplus ammo, just flush with plenty of plain ol' H20.

    just messin with ya.

get a funnel, on the end attach a tube, lead it into your barrel, get your water, pour, flush good.
clean and simple, after that clean it out.

I second what Walter Zoomie said. Brake Cleaner works wonders. I just bought another Mosin-Nagant, got 2 cans of Brake cleaner and hosed it down good. Clean as a whistle. I sprayed it down the barrel, brushed, sprayed some more, brushed more then ran some patches down it. 6 patches and it was clean. Dont forget to oil every thing good. The brake cleaner will 'dry' the metal out.

Brake cleaner is awesome. I've been using it for years in the Army especially when firing blanks which leave a rifle filthy. Cuts your cleaning time in half.:yesway:

I have the same problem with mine. After the first cleaning the barrel was dull but after putting some rounds thru it and then a good cleaning it brightened up. Still I take it out about once a month to strip it and clean it and every patch i push down the barrel is tar black. Barrel is still bright but the patches still come out black. It kinda has me wondering if that is throwing off the accuacy of the rifle at the longer ranges (100yds+). Ill give the brake cleaner a try next time I pull it out to clean or shoot.

Paint thinner/mineral spirits will work also. Use your imagination. Whatever solvent product you use to clean greasy filthy crap around the house or garage will most likely be good to go for a grungy firearm barrel/bore.

You just gotta be careful using "whatever," because "whatever" might screw up plastic, or wood finishes...and then you'll be mad at me, but I'll laugh at you for listening to me and not using common sense or reading the label on your "whatever" solvent!

Ive always have good luck with Isopropyl alcohol. Works greats on new rifles too, as it cuts thru cosmaline like its not there. Just make sure you re-oil the rifle afterwards because it will dry out the metal.
