    HUGE UPDATE

So, I go back to Kroger tonight. I don't see him initially, but when I finish my shopping, he's at the front standing at the door. So apparently he does work this specific Kroger.

I checkout behind a lady that is VERY slow, right in front of him. I look at him, and I think he glances a couple times. He doesn't seem interested. I'm done and on my way out, he doesn't mind.

I turn around, and approach him.

"Were you here a couple nights ago?"
    He just nods
"Did you... I mean, why didn't you just ask me for my license?"
"You're wondering why I followed you?"
"The way you handled it, I felt uncomfortable."
"Well carrying like that, you make a lot more people uncomfortable."
I chuckled at this, and explained that I oftentimes get very positive and good conversations.

So, I'm just standing there listening. I'm going to paraphrase because it's all jumbled in my head (happened about 10 minutes ago). Essentially, if someone were to come in and rob the place, I'd be the first person they take out. He said legally he could have taken my handgun until I could prove it was mine. He highly disagrees with OC, and said if he didn't have to OC, he wouldn't.

He said he followed me to just make sure that I don't do anything, etc... and that even if someone was unarmed they could overpower me and get my gun if they wanted to, and he could to. I say "Well yeah, you're trained for that..." and he says there are people far more trained than him out there.

He kept pointing at mine when he said "carrying like that", and how tactically, it's a huge disadvantage, don't want anyone to know you're carrying, and that he knows it's my right to carry and protect my life, my family, my property, etc. He said day one at Police academy, they say "Never Open Carry".

Now, I feel better having talked to the officer. He seemed like a very nice guy. I disagree with some of his opinions and views, but I do appreciate him taking the time to explain why he did what he did.

I can handle everything he said except what is in red above. That part is making my blood boil!

The rest of it was his opinion... and you know what they say about that :D

Taking a gun until you can prove it is yours is THEFT, and a violation of the 4th Amend UNLESS you are breaking the law WITH the gun.

Just like a car. He can't pull you over randomly and tow your car because you dont have a Registration, he has to have a cause to pull you over first.

The part in blue explains a LOT about IMPDs attitude toward gun owners..

Don't get me wrong, I am glad he was nice about it, however wrong he may be..
    ---

    Edit:
Anyone want to meet me at Kroger sometime for some OC shopping? :D

He said legally he could have taken my handgun until I could prove it was mine.

    :bs:

Did you ask him how you could "prove" the gun was yours since IN doesn't require any registration or any other paperwork AT ALL to buy a gun from a private party?

Who care's how he FEELS about OC. It's legal. Get over it.

He may have seemed like a nice guy but I still think he's a tool for trying to intimidate you into changing your lawful actions. He wasn't even man enough to enforce the "law" that he made up.

Then he acted like he was doing you a favor by not "enforcing" it.

    That would be :lmfao:

    if it wasn't so

Good to see that you went back and stood up for yourself. Because no one else is going to. Good for you. :yesway:

The fact that this loser is stationed at a Kroger says more about him than anything else. Not only was he wrong, in so many ways, he's a loser.
And that statement alone speaks loads about you.

Your ignorance is only surpassed by your arrogance. I'm sure many people here will be happy to learn that working at a Kroger is beneath you.

If only I could buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you believe you're worth.

Kroger seemed to step up their security after one of their employees at the Mars Hill store was murdered (shot to death) in their parking lot.

Wow. That's all I can say.

Although I believe you about his demeanor, I'm not sure I could have ended it without being really miffed. That first quoted statement is beyond ridiculous. I think there's a very good chance his demeanor would have changed had you challenged his "opinion" on his authority to steal property whose ownership can't be proven.

I disagree. I have respect for anyone who works a job and is trying to have a better life. he probly makes a lot more than even the managers in that store do. some of the cops who work private security that I have known make at least $25 an hour. not to shabby just to be a presence.

I'd be in for an OC at Kroger, but bear in mind that they ARE anti 2a. They are known for donating gift cards (at a discounted rate) to gun buy back programs, etc... even though they publicly deny being anti. A quick google search will yield quite a few stories about it out of Texas.

The part in red had me a bit confused too, but then I remember selling a handgun to a guy without a receipt , and luckily we crossed paths on a regular basis, he contacted me around Jan15th , and told me he got a DUI on new years eve and had the gun with him and they did take the gun and refuse to give it back to him until he could prove it was his, and he asked me to give him a receipt, of course I did.

That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard! I've got firearms that I've owned for 30+ years, bought FTF, and have no receipt.

I would say that unless a firearm's serial number comes back as being on a "stolen" list, the cop is committing nothing less than theft if he takes a firearm from someone.

How many people keep receipts for everything they own? How many people even get receipts for the majority of things we own, much less keep them on our person at all times.

Kind of gives a new meaning to "papers please."

    Agreed.
I hate to give in to crap like this, but I think I will photograph my guns and send the pics to my phone to have a "record" in case I run into a LEO that agrees with Officer Kroger's philosophy.

Of course, if it happens in Indy, we will have to wait while they ballistics test our guns, then give our prints to get them back :n00b:

The problem with this is, of course, that you then would have to hand over your phone also so he could look through your pictures (and while he's at it, your contact list, and recent calls, emails, etc). Besides, I doubt that a goon such as that would accept a picture rather than a receipt. He'd just claim that you just took it, or some such nonsense to make it more difficult for you to get your property back.

And if he kept your phone too, then what? Probably don't carry the receipt for that either, do you?? :dunno:

As much as I can't afford it, I'd probably get a lawyer. I have no patience for illegal goon tactics, and I'd probably end up getting arrested for resisting arrest.
