Thinking of signing up for a hog hunt and my daughter wants to go. Looking at getting her a gun for this. So far I have looked at a lever action 44magnum and a Taurus circuit judge. Would either of these be ok at killing a hog or should I look at a bigger round. She isn't. Comfortable shooting my 12ga but I have thought about an AR10 in 308 or 458 socom. Any thoughts?

I think part of it would have to do with type of hunt:

A Hog Drive, stand or blind, baited or not, ATV, etc.

And what ranges you could be shooting, long range, or close running shots?

Thought about calling the outfitter/organizer and seeing what they recommend/use?

An SKS / AK-pattern in 7.62x39 is good hog medicine, too.

    .243Win would be good...

    .270 would be good...

I would figure out why that is first, then decide on the gun. I am not saying go shotgun, but knowing if it is fit or recoil issues would be important before you hand her a .308 and recreate the same problems in a different flavor.

When my Daughter was 13, she prefered a Benelli M2 over a .308. It surprised the hell out of me, but she loved the percieved destructive power of 12 gauge at closer ranges.

    Kids, go figure.

She is 11yo and I think the sheer size of the round intimidates her. She saw me shoot it but isn't quite ready to tackle the 12ga so I'm not going to push her into it. I forgot about a 7.62x39 never thought about that. We are going to be doing a pay hunt at DD ranch over in Ohio. I know she loves to shoot my AR15 but I would rather have something with some more knock down power for a hog. I figure we will be within 50 yards for this hunt. Since this will be her first hunt I want to try to make it memorable.

I'm heading over to DD in Ohio next month for a hog hunt.
This is what I am taking. I just finished it Monday. It's a 6.8SPC. Should work great for hogs.

If I like DD Ranch, I plan on taking my son next spring.

You could just let her use the AR for a headshot and then you back her up with your gun.

I have never shot a hog but thay have been shot with just about every caliber out there.

I think you forgot a good option. How about a boar spear been used effectively for centurys :)::D http://www.google.com/products/cata...a=X&ei=9TlyTrLLMZCCtgeLyrCWCQ&ved=0CDcQ8wIwAA

I'm planning an AR in .458 SOCOM for deer/hogs-when-they-get-here. That's another option if you've got time to build or buy one.

Yeah I have always thought spearing a hog would be fun but they are not allowed where we will be going, maybe once they get here I will give that a shot:ingo:

The 458 Socom is something I have been leaning towards cause it is legal to take deer with here. How much kick does a 458 Socom have? Might be the issue with my daughter

Unsure, never shot one, but I'm going to build one and find out the first time I pull the trigger...

I also hunt with 12ga. slugs and love shooting my Mosin, so the recoil issue would be a bit different for me.

The DNR sent me email to tell me Indiana has a wild hog problem (feral hogs) and there is open season on them if you have a farmers permission to hunt on his land where he has the problem. You could find a farmer with a problem and use your spear. Glad you took that suggestion in the right vein.

I'm planning on going soon myself to DD, depending on what you guys say about it. I was on their site again today and some of it sort of puts me off--they have pics of some of their animals inside fences/pens. I'm hoping the hogs are a little more wild.

I'm planning on using my old 25-06 but for your daughter, wouldn't just a plain old AR do the trick or is the 5.56 too small for hogs? There's virtually no kick to that and it's got a certain cool factor kids like.

My second recommendation is a 500 Nitro Express double rifle. After that, she'll LOVE the shotgun:)

    DD customers...

PLEASE report back on if these are canned hunting events.

If they ARE canned... Let your own morals be your guide on if you take a confined animal or not.

Long ago a friend shot a wild Tennessee hog broadside with a .44 mag single shot revolver. He said the hog turned 90 degrees and came straight at him. He fired again and hit him in the chest under his neck and dropped him DOA. I'd consider something more deadly. Maybe a large caliber semi-auto rifle. :twocents:

I've never hunted any ranch or with guides or any of that stuff so I don't know how this all works but this link right here is what made me go...uh, what?! The pic of the animals in the fence. And their guarantee that says that if you don't get the animal you pay for, you get a full refund--how can they guarantee that?

    Current Events

I'm not putting the place down cause I really would like to go there to get a hog. I meant to call them today but got busy and didn't have the time. I'm going to try to talk to them to get a clear picture of what goes on. If anyone finds out before me, please post.

(Sorry if this is hijacking the thread, I just thought since it was mentioned already, I thought I'd try to add to it.)

I'd rather avoid canned hunts, but still dig the idea of being able to hunt things I'd never otherwise afford...

I don't know what this is, but I want to kill one!
