State Farm has treated my family well. Went to AFI when I got married, and got burned by them right quick, as did my in-laws.

AFI took our payment once, and when it came time for home insurance again, our mortgage company (which pays in escrow) called us to ask why we canceled our home insurance and didn't get another.. you know, because it's a violation of our contract for the mortgage. Come to find out, they took my money, canceled my account, and then played dumb. When I called shenanigans, they scribbled some stuff on paper, and said, "Oh sorry, you were *cough* covered the entire time because I just fixed it in the computer..." After arguing for a bit, I said "Fine, what are you going to do to compensate me for my days loss of time trying to figure this out?"

    Nothing, sorry.

Went back to SF and still no troubles. I don't teach CPR or run a gun shop, but my agent knows I've got some. Interesting thing though.

By default, they only cover 5K worth of firearms without additional coverage. Too bad, I don't have that much :(

The agent I've got is a good guy to shoot the s%$% with - don't know what he thinks about guns personally though.

Haven't dealt with SF myself. Mainly because of the horror stories I've heard from customers of theirs. The good thing is that there are lots of reputable companies out there willing to do business.
    ^^This ^^

I have heard from friends who once had SF that they ran into problems and have since dropped them.

I believe that in evaluating an insurance company, one item we tend to overlook is how our insurance company treats those who have a claim against our policy.
That is one of several reasons I avoid State Farm like the plague. They're not "like a good neighbor" at all!! :(

Been with SF for over 40 years with no complaints till this last year or so. Reading this has pushed me on, looking into USAA which I hear from some other Vets I work with is good.

I've used USAA for decades and never had an issue with them. The couple of times I've filed a claim with them they were prompt and didn't bat an eye. Their customer service is top notch, as is their coverage.

Wow. We've been with SF for decades. Of course, our agent is a family friend (and a firearms enthusiast). Never an issue that a quick call to our agent's office didn't fix. That's all home/auto and such, not business, so probably apples and oranges.

I've heard great things about USAA as well. A good friend switched everything over to them after a tussle with his previous insurer.

I don't do business with "Snake Farm". I've had a friend who used to use them on home, vehicle, boat, etc. When he had a claim it was like nobody was home. I guess that's what the mean by "like a good neighbor".

This is interesting about the 5k coverage. I called my SF office in Shelbyville last year and they said that the basic home policy only covers up to $1500.00 for Guns, jewelry, and electronics. You must purchase additional coverage if you need more.

The amount of coverage for Guns, jewelry, electronics, etc... is limited depending on the type of loss that occurs. In the case of a theft loss, there will be a limit as to how much the policy will pay out. The amount depends on the policy itself. Some companies use older policy forms that have less coverage sub-limits regarding loss of personal property due to theft. If, for example, your house were to burn down and all of your firearms are lost, there is no limit as to how much you can claim. Personal property (firearms, jewelry, electronics) is covered on a "Named Peril" basis which means that the type of loss has to be named in the policy for it to be covered.

If you do have more than what your policy covers than I'd suggest to increase those limits asap by endorsing your policy. I always suggest to take photos, keep receipts and catalog your inventory and give that to your agent or keep in a firebox just in case....

I hope that makes a little more sense. Unfortunately, most of the time it's when one suffers a loss when they find out the type of coverage that they have.

If anyone has any other questions just PM me and I'll try to help as much as I can.

State Farm is not in the commercial insurance business. The only commercial business they can write is low risk stuff like offices, hairdressers etc. Not much else really.

Being the largest means that they will have the most complaints.

This information is dead nuts incorrect.

PM me in the am, I will tell you exactly what it covers.

I was looking at opening a shop here in Southern Indiana, called my local agent, he never even blinked took my info got me the forms and followed up with a call to see when I was gonna open.:rockwoot:

Was with IFB for YEARS without issue...until they forced my agent out and customer service went into the toilet...followed my agent to his independent agency after his non-compete term was up.

State Farm is truly one of the oldest names in insurance, and theirs is a name you can trust. If State Farm did not provide excellent customer service and satisfaction, there's no way there would still be going strong. Often, it's much cheaper to buy all your average home insurance cost plans through one carrier than through several different companies.

Look some State Farm agent signed up just to post in this thread :D

    Great commercial you posted.

I've been a State Farm policy holder since 1975. They've always paid off like a slot machine whether it was my fault, the fault of the weather, or the fault of someone else. They've put two roofs on this house in the last 6 years due to wind and hail damage, and didn't blink. All my vehicles are with them, and in the 4 or 5 claims we've had, they have never balked.

I don't know of State Farm is even in the business insurance business. I've never needed business insurance yet.
