The internet can survive without Google, it's not like it's the only search engine we can use.You have dozens and dozens of search engines in many countries.
Google can just shut down itself, not the internet.

Of course. My apologies if you thought otherwise. I initially read the story on a tech blog where the title wouldn't be taken literally.

None the less, that list is impressive. Even more so if they would decide to shut off services and the like. That could mean a lot of broken feeds, search results, etc. I bet those companies wouldn't push the envelop that far.

In all honesty INGO has taken up a lot of my former Facebook time. I currently have both sites open but I am posting here instead of there so I wouldn't see it as that big of a deal if FB went dark. My real FB friends have my email & / or cell # so we could still chat if we wanted to.

Go ahead - turn all that stuff off. The internet will still be there. So will people who use it. No one will be harmed by this action except the companies who turn off their services.

I have always tied to curtail my FB posts. Too many kooks that want to effect my business and life.

A LOT of people use Facebook every day. If Facebook takes itself offline, and replaces its page with something like:

We have gone offline. Blame your congressman and vote accordingly.

A LOT of people will do just that.

If Google goes offline, will they take their gmail service down, too? That will tick off a LOT of people as well. Especially if they get an auto-reply to every email message sent through gmail stating they can blame their congressman for what is happening.

The majority of posters are missing the point here. The law is a very loosely writtten package and grants the government basically unlimited censorship. Copyright laws can be considered oh let's say a t-shirt with an advertisement in a picture. An unauthorized picture of your new bushmaster you post on INGO. Basically anything containing a copyright or trademark used without consent could be censored. There seems to be a lot of people on here that look at things from the so what it doesn't change my day to day yuk yuk yuk. Seriously if this law passes it is essentially granting the government control of the internet.

That woud break a lot of things, but everything would be switched over in a week easy. It would be a nice decentralization lesson for all of us ;)

Do you think those websites shutting down would help herd the sheep?

It might wake up a few million who otherwise would still be zombie strolling through their day.

For those of you who don't know what SOPA is, SOPA stands for the Stop Online Piracy Act. It's also known as H.R.3261 While it may sound like something that may be stopping Piracy, it is written (as usual) so that government can go after everyone for pretty much anything and allow the government to shut down pretty much any site they want to. It would be devastating to the Internet. SOPA makes it possible for companies to block the domain names of web sites that are simply capable of, or seem to encourage copyright infringement. Yes, this could include INGO. Remember when we stopped allowing the copy and pasting of articles?? If this were to pass, we would probably even have to go so far as stop allowing youtube videos (assuming youtube would still be up and running).

Scutter and I dumped godaddy the end of last year because they were behind this bill. For someone like godaddy to be behind a bill like this is irresponsible.

Here's a link to write to members of Congress.

That's every blog and website in the world.

I told you guys that the internet and the free exchange of ideas outside
of the "mainstream" media was the most dangerous thing to a corrupt government.

They are losing their monopoly on lies and what they are able to get by with and it has them scared ****less.
