Probably done by some mental invalid-type that also shoots road signs, dumps trash and appliances along country roads, won't pay bills/child support, poaches game ect ect.
No respect for anybody or anything.
I've had a gut full of that.

I got so riled up I forgot to say I'm sorry that happened to you.

I'm sorry to hear about the damage. This is one of the ranges I've been wanting to visit.

I'm hoping this guy isn't an INGO member....

That sucks that someone had so little respect for you that they thought it would be fun to destroy your property. Have you considered investing in a low-cost camera system that will allow you to see when damage occurs and cross-reference it to the person assigned to that lane?

    Another option...

"Due to someone's complete disregard of range rules, thousands of dollars in damage was caused. For this reason, we will not allow any .223 until 4-1-2012."

I'll bet people will be less willing to turn a blind eye in the future.

Sorry for the miscreant damage. If it were my very own "back-40" Range.

(If I had one): I'd have a supply of Masonite, or other semi-hard targets, made available to the steel-only fans for two-bucks ea. or so, and separate poles to hang them on. Turn the steel targets "up" so that they cannot be hit. Also institute a "Magnet Sweep" of all ammo to ferret out the steel bullets. If anyone can't abide by that simple addition to your Range-Rules, then they don't get in.

Sounds like you have too much faith in people to do the right thing. Who's to say the guy shooting wasn't a novice and had no idea what he had. It sucks to year about you being out money for the repairs but it sounds like all of this could have been avoided had someone taken the time to check the ammo the guy was going to shot.

So you blame the victim? Nice.

Any thoughts on INGO kicking in to help out. Or is this something insurance will cover?
    Just a thought, I'd kick in a 10 spot

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune.

It sucks that the ones that follow the rules get punished for the one jerk off that does not.

I don't want to be the type of range where the RSO's hover over everyone making sure they use the right ammunition. We have had a lot of people using regular handgun ammunition on the Standard Range as well. That makes me angry but is more of an annoyance than anything. Now we are talking about ammunition that is punching through a ballistic curtain and AR500 armor plate. The only .223 that will do that is steel core or armor piercing.

IME, green tip will barely dimple my 3/8 AR500, although sparks fly everywhere. If it was going through AR500 plate, I'm guessing you has someone shooting something with a tungsten carbide core.

However, as m955 is all but impossible to get, are you certain you didn't have someone shooting 30-06 ap? Or maybe someone with a 220 swift or other real high vel cartridge? I know AR500 really doesn't like it once you go above 3600 fps.

    Best,

    Joe

Yeah I am sure it was .223. Everyone who comes in with a cased rifle is checked to make sure it is the right caliber. I have had a couple of people come in already to inspect the damage who are very familiar with all types of ammo especially AP rounds. they all agree it had to be an AP round. They also agreed a steel core bullet would not have penetrated the AR500 plate so effectively.
My staff and customers have been talking and I guess the only solution is to inspect bags of anyone wanting to shoot rifles. It really sucks because I feel it is a violation and that I shouldn't have to do it. The vast majority follow the rules and are great yet they have to be searched to insure nothing gets through and causes additional damage. This really really sucks.
I guess I am taking it too personally but I have spent now three years putting this project together, a lot of money and time. I could have made a lot more money in the past three years in my other company instead of putting my time into this project. Now with all this time and effort into a facility where a lot of people can enjoy shooting and training someone comes in and causes all this damage because they just didn't give a darn really ()*&& me off.

I have no idea where the Kodiak range is, and hope you figure out who did it!

What do you guys consider frangible ammo? I mean does it have to be actual labeled frangible ammo? or is lead core / copper/brass/steel jacketed ammo OK?

On a brighter note we have already had 5 brand new shooters come in today for the free basic handgun course and 4 more scheduled this afternoon. Many more over the weekend. We have had a lot of parents come in with their kids in the past few weeks and growing. It is really nice to see. What is surprising is the number of dads/daughters are vastly outnumbering the dads/sons.

Sorry to hear about what happened at your range. I'm not sure how you are set up, but do you track who comes in and which lane they are using? I would love to see someone held accountable for their blatant misuse of your facility.

I hope you find out who it was.

    Devil's Advocate:
Even if he did find the person, lets call him "Joe Shooter". Now what?
Kodiak will ask him to pay for the damages and Joe Shooter says NO.
Now Kodiak has to spend more $$$ taking it to small claims court (if under the limit) or taking it to court to sue for the damages. Either one cost money and takes time with no guarantee that Joe Shooter will even pay!

So you blame the victim? Nice.

Sadly everyone see it a bit different. :(
However what's to say Joe Shooter is not a first time shooter and has no clue about the difference in ammo types? He just shoot what he bought at wally world and did not think anything of it, or the safety issues?

We are oh so quick to blast Joe Shooter and not like him. Yet we have no clue if he did it on purpose (ie. knew that that type of ammo should not be used and used it anyways) or if he is indeed a 100% n00bie.

isn't it illegal to possess AP rounds?

Depends on what type of round it is.

Handgun rounds (which in this case we know it is NOT) are illegal in Indiana.

    (1) manufactures;
    (2) possesses;
    (3) transfers possession of; or

    (c) This section does not apply to nylon coated ammunition, plastic shot capsules, or ammunition designed to be used in rifles or shotguns.
    (d) This section does not apply to a law enforcement officer who is acting in the course of the officer's official duties or to a person who manufactures or imports for sale or sells armor-piercing handgun ammunition to a law enforcement agency.
