The forestry guy told me a few years ago what kind of chemical to get to kill vines but I forget what it was now. He said you had to spray it on every root entry point to kill it. Anyone have any recommendations?

I have heard of some people cutting the vine, drill a hole in the rooted end, and then put in one of those flower feeder things. That way the vine sucks in the roundup-etc and then you don't have to worry about over spray.

I have never tried it though.

I see Rural King carries it so I'll have to pick some up. Thanks!

He speaks the truth. Tordon RTU is good stuff. Cut the vine (a set of loppers work well) and apply it to the cut within 30 minutes of cutting. It will transport in the root system without affecting nearby vegetation.

I cut one the other day and put some on it. How late in the year can it be applied? Can it be done throughout the winter?

I got started on my woods today cutting vines. I had a few that were obviously dead. They'd break right off at the ground. I had a few that run along the ground in runs several feet long. Those, I tried to cut in a few different spots. I tried to cut everything level so I could get as much Tordon to stay on them as I could. I cut the vines going up about 4-5' off the ground as well so they couldn't try to resprout.

Does that sound right or is there something I should be doing differently?

No need to cut and treat several vines, try and find the main root and teat it if possible. But if it's coming out of the ground it is possible that the vine has sprouted roots mid vine, so it's good to treat it as well. As far as it staying on the vine, you can actually treat the vine without cutting it with the RTU. Just apply it to the lower 4-6" of the parent vine.
