Why is it that I drive by a smaller nuclear power plant... No fence... No security that I can see... Can even pull right into the parking lot... But I drive by a HUGE BP refinery and its locked down like ft Knox????

One would think the nuke plant would have the tighter security... Or at least equal...

Do you know how to breach and lower all the safety bypasses necessary to initiate a core meltdown of a nuclear reactor? I'm guessing probably not. At best, most attackers could jack up the water supply and cause an auto shut-down.

Can you ignite gasoline? Yes. My discombobulated 17 year old daughter could take down the refinery by accident!

I'm guessing that's where the difference lies. :dunno:

Agreed I just found it odd that you could practically walk into a nuke plant.

I wouldn't try that if I were you.
I've been outta the nuc business for a while.
But while I was in, they tended to keep security a secret.
I think it was something about denial of information.

I remember seeing on "Sons of Guns" on Discovery that the full auto AR conversion they did with the AK style gas blocks was specifically for the type of private security used to defend Nuclear plants.

Having worked for Westinghouse at Byron and Braidwood, as well as Point Beach for Wisconsin Electric, I would be interested to know what Nuke facility has no security. They searched me, my suitcase, my tools, my truck, looked under it with mirrors and even opened up the air cleaner. I was no where near the fuel rods and still had to walk through detectors. .

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. There are very few "small nuclear power stations". They are big, whopping pieces of real estate with fences, barricades, and armed guards. They are very security conscious.

I am guessing that you have seen a fossil plant with a cooling tower that looks like the ones always depicted in photos of nuclear power plants. Maybe?

After 8 years as a navy nuke I am sure I could figure it out.

That's the only thing that keeps you sane while standing an SRO watch on mids....

"What is the quickest and easiest way to break the plant?"

"How many people would I need to Hijack the ship and take it out to sea?"

"Ship destruction procedure, what do I go after first....?"

Located near the lake in Ohio between Sandusky and Toledo... Been trying to look it up... Has just one of the big cooling stacks and can see any of those dome roofed buildings that you usually see.

Dave, we all know that there is no threat to society by destroying nuclear power plants. The only real threat to our society would be the armed citizens. Take their guns away and the world is now a safe place for all, especially for the children!
