I like that. Using the CHIRP software, where would I put the Tx frequency? Or can I change something else to prevent accidental transmission?

This is the 'downfall' of the CHIRP software since what I did is not a normal thing to do. So it's not as straight forward on the CHIRP software like it is on the VIPs where you have a TX column.

So here is how you do it in CHIRP

    Freq column = 154.08500
Hit enter and allow the defaults that CHIRP add be put in.
Now right click on the FREQ # and select EDIT
The offseet should say 0.0 right now.

Now this is where you need some math.
You want to be at 146.52 so from your current feq you need to go DOWN.
    154.085 - 146.52 = 7.565
So your offset will be 7.565 and the DUPLEX will be "-"

In Chirp, go to the "Duplex" column and hit the dropdown on the line you want to change. Use the "off" option, this sets to receive only, no transmit.
    http://kc9hi.dyndns.org/uv5r/programming/CHIRP Guide.pdf is a helpful guide.

Well color me PINK!!! So what does the "off" put in the TX column or how does the radio know NOT to TX.

The reason I put the SIMPLEX channel is because when I have my radios next to my PC and hit the TX key on my computer when talking on TeamSpeak (similar to SKYPE but for gaming) something in my PC (magentic wave/radio wave/ :dunno:) causes the radios to also TX without me hitting the button!!!!

The off puts 000.000 in the transmit column, effectively disabling the transmitter. I do that with any public service frequencies I program into the radio. Don't need to accidentally pop up on some LEO's radio.

Thank you jedi, Bill B, and NavyVet!

I'm definitely learning a lot about radios and will start working on me Tech license soon.

I went looking for aircraft frequencies, but when I tried to put in the 3 guard channels it said not in frequency range. I take it I would need a different radio for that?

Again, thanks for all the info.

    So which is better?
Putting 000.000 or the SIMPLEX feq?

    000.000 is preferred.

Transmitting on simplex inadvertently would not be good if you were not monitoring it for a response. It would also interfere with simplex Comms if someone were using the frequency when you keyed up.

The 000.000 is outside the radio capability, it knows it and refuses to transmit.

As for aircraft, that is usually 120mhz and the 'bottom' of the radio is 136mhz. You might be able to set the lower limit to something less than 136, but I definitely would not transmit that low of a frequency as nothing in the radio is tuned to support it.

After reading the Manuel and checking the INTERNET, these little radios have great potential. The cd provided, has done nothing to help program the radio. As you can read above the group buy founder has no clue what he is doing either.

I am going to need help programing mine, and the usb cable and driver installation is useless. The group buy guy will be by shortly to belittle me as to why I didnt ask him first about why I couldnt get my radio to work.

    A. Because, I shouldnt have to ask for help on a group buy. 2. The unseeded cd included is worthless. C. Buying from amazon would have gotten the product here quicker and leaving negative feedback wouldnt cause as much backlash.

what operating system are you using?
What we (gungunnies and myself) have found out is windows XP will **NOT** work with any of the driverson the CD or online. WIN 7 and 8 I have been able to use to get the radio to talk via the USB Cable.

Which programming software are you using? CHIRP or the mfg software (VIP??).

    First, have you tried:
Second, At what point did Jedi, or anyone, claim to be an expert on these radios?
    Third, "due diligence"
I have no idea where you are, or I'd be glad to try to help. What OS are you running?

Be nice you to or else Jedi is going to :bat: on you. :D
Allow the member to vent. Programming the radios and getting them up and running can be a challenge the first time around, especially with the "driver issues" on getting a PC to see/read the radio.

Sadly the member is in Oxford, IN so he is a bit far for us (NWI INGO) to drive out to help him. But I'm sure we can give him some direction via INGO, step-by-step or even youtube videos to get him up and running shortly.

    @Chase515
Just answer the OS (operating system) questions first so we can get the driver issue fixed first. That is the biggest challenge to these radios.
