I don't care for the East Side at all but have never been anywhere where I've felt unsafe. I've found that the good out number the bad everywhere.

Both my parents are retired teachers from urban schools and early on, I learned through them that scary areas aren't trouble when you keep your head. Sure bad things happen. They happen everywhere but some areas seem to have it happen more often. When I used to deliver beer and it took me to some very "interesting" places and I stand tall behind my statement that I've never felt overly unsafe anywhere. There are worse places than Indy. We are fortunate to have as good of a city as we do. Could be better. Could be far worse.

    Just for giggles....

Blue dots are a violent crime within the last 30 days. Total of 1356 reports.
    picture.php

The program won't return a month of data for ALL crime. Too large of a set. So, for TWO WEEKS we get 4837 total reports for all violent, property, and "other" crime. The image looks like:
    picture.php

Blue dots are violent, triangles are property, and stars are "other".

Starts to become pretty obvious where the BAD areas are, and the better.

Has anyone rolled up New Jersey from 16th st. north. That used to be wicked ugly place after dark. Now it is revitalized with mom's walking the kids and the dog.

That is part of the Herron-Morton neighborhood and I have several friends who live near there. All of them live in $250k+ homes that in the 80s were either completely boarded up and abandoned or were drug houses. One of them still has evidence of the previous occupants trying to burn it down.

When I moved here some of my Franklin friends were amazed I'd move downtown because that is where all the crime is. Within a 1 mile radius of my new house there were fewer police runs, fewer police runs for violence, and fewer registered sex offenders, than within 1 mile of my Franklin house. And that isn't adjusted for the increased population density.

There is actually a big statistical shift going on is several major US cities. The trend is more people living below the poverty line in the suburbs than in the cities, more foreclosures in the suburbs than in the cities, abandoned/unoccupied properties, crime rates inverting, etc etc. Indy is right there in the thick of those trends.

I worked a armed security gig at the Marathon gas station on 29th and MLK across from the Double Eight food store for six months. That area was full of all kinds of crazy. I will never work alone in that area again.

I dropped in to that security company's office about a year later to return some shirts of theirs I found while moving. They told me that the guy who replaced me worked new years eve and was run out of there at gun point and that he called in and quit that night. They cancelled the contract the next day.

I try very hard to abide by the "stay out of Marion county" mantra these days, at least for living. I still work in the county because of the job. The area that is considered "bad" seems to expand over time.

Any neighborhood where you aren't situationally aware of your surroundings is the worst area of Indy.
Then again, you could apply that logic to anywhere.

38th and everything , MLK and anything , the area surrounding state fairgrounds , Washington st from white river pkwy west to 465 , Haughville , Mars Hill and pretty much the whole east side .

I know it's changing, but is it that bad now? I went to school at South Wayne and lots of my friends lived in Mars Hill. Uneducated white trash was the worst one had to deal with back then. I take it that's no longer the case.

    Anywhere inside Marion County.

I have to believe people who make comments like this are speaking out of their asses or just so backwoods that anything about a metropolitan area scares the ever loving shyte out of them.

I agree. If it is so damn scary why do so many live here.
Roll some areas in Gary/Chicogo etc and this place is great by comparison.

It's still the case and in some windows at night you can see Nazi flags flying , although the demographic is slowly changing .

Did you see the crime map up thread ? Have you seen Public Servant's avatar ?

Back in the 80's I worked on HVAC/Refrigeration like Churchmouse.

They call, you roll. We had stores on Chicago south side(103rd st) all the way to 51st Street. Stony Island Ave had more people hanging out at night(after 10:00pm than during the day). We chained our ladders to the gutters if you went on a roof anytime.
After numerous vehicle break ins, we quit night service unless you could park in front of the entry doors. We rescheduled most calls to day calls. Got tired of buying tools.

Then there was Gary, In. Same garbage, different smell. My van was stolen twice, recovered empty(bosses van actually), decided it was enough. Insurance was sky high for theft of tools, so retired on to different job.
Became a Police Officer, moved to a rural Town, and have not missed an emergency break down call.

My son attends an Indy College and as I got off the highway, found out that the East Side, and 38th St(Parallel like Korea) was the "WAR Zone".

I am well armed, vehicle full of fuel(no stops in the ghetto), cooler w/ beverages. Just like Stony Island at nighttime, even daytime). I avoid that side of Indy if possible.
Good luck to you Indy folks, you need it. Rough area for sure.
