Why does GM/Ford/Chrysler put tiresvand rims on their vehicles when they know the buyer is just going to buy a custom set as soon as they get it home?

They put on something basic that will work because it is hard to please everyone.

This brings up a follow up question, what brand sights do you prefer? Do you have different brands on different guns?

I prefer what ever gives me a distinct front sight with a clean and non-distracting rear.

I would be all over XS sights if they didn't confuse my eyes for precision on the range. Dropping a dot in a V is fast and easy but repeatably doing it precisely to the same point is something I'm apparently incapable of. Something like the ameriglo hackathorns really is the best alteration of the concept to still retain precise repeatability for range time.

I have a similar set up with my 686 as well.

Considering no brand really does the exact same thing for every platform, I have to go with different brands and combinations.
That said, almost every gun I have has different sights on it. A couple of my glocks even retain their standard sights because they work well for me on the specific gun. My USP keeps its standard sights because they work wonderfully for me as well. It's just that some guns don't jive well with me after a few times of shooting them and drastically improve when I apply that type of sight picture to them.

Honestly, I don't know ANYONE who changes car tires when they get a new car.

If guns are primarily used for self defense, it seems like they can put night sights on them. I know everyone will not be pleased with anything a manufacturer does, but I was just curious. As someone brought up up-thread, my Sigs came with night sights and I didn't have to do anything with them.

First thing I did when I bought my jeep was change the tires and wheels. :D

It depends. I am happy with most of the sights that came on my SIG handguns, I like the old "lollipop" style that came on some of my older ones and the newer ones come with decent night sights.

My HK pistols have nice sights, though I'm really not crazy about the ones on my HK USP 45 Tactical...all black rear and all black front. Wanting some green rear/orange front Meps for that one.

My PPQ came with sights good for target shooting, however, they are not night sights...but I'm waiting for some other companies to put out their PPQ sights and I'll be patient to do some research on those...

My PPS came with some crap sights which I just changed over to Meps...much better now.

I guess that the missing choice for the poll would be: It depends on if the gun came with decent sights.

Way back when I was single, I always changed out the rims and tires.

If they put night sights on them I still wouldn't like them because I am not big on night sights.

I have a whole ton of different sights/optics on rifles, but I only have one handgun that I have swapped the sights on (xd subcompact upgraded to big dots).

I wonder why that is? I probably have about as many handguns as I do rifles. Maybe I don't consider sights to be as important on handguns as I do on rifles. Maybe I am more confident with rifles so I feel more competent changing the configuration.

I guess the tire and rims thing is a generation behind me or something. I never wanted to draw attention while driving.

I'm not a night sight person, either. But, it just seems that if handguns are primarily for self defense, night sights would be a better option than the sights that are plastic and sometimes even fall off.

I always change sights on my guns. Depending on what the gun is to be used for dictates what sights go on it. Since I do this, I'm actually glad they put cheap sights on the guns, so I'm not paying a bunch for them in the first place.

I almost never change the factory sights. Stainless single actions sometimes get the sights blackened with a marker, etc. Have a slight preference for a white dot front sight and no preference for the rear sight; except for sufficient width to bracket the front.

Yes Cedartop is a well respected instructor. I believe he actually teaches courses dealing with close contact use of handguns. He simply stated that the data he has seen does not suggest that non LEO use of a firearm in self defense situations are as close as many think. I have a pretty good idea what data he is referencing. 3 - 7 yards is both close enough for a bad person to hurt you and far enough away that you can miss. My suggestion is to have a good set of functional sights on your gun and learn to use them.
