Hey guys. Thought I would let you all know that the McDonald's located on Sixth Street in Vincennes is not a supporter of the second amendment and neither is the Vincennes police department. Went to lunch yesterday with my roommates, me carrying a Glock 19 OWB, one of them carrying an XDM 45 OWB and the other carrying a long rifle (begin the trolling). No awkward looks at of any kind and we sat down and began eating. About fifteen minutes later when we were all finishing up we notice two officers pull up outside on either side of the restaurant. One retrieves a shotgun, the other an AR from his trunk. We watch them both peer through the windows, looking for threats and coming up empty. They enter at the same time, weapons at the low ready scanning for threats, still coming up empty. I greet the officer and ask him how he is doing and he shouts, "Who here has an AR?" My roommate chimes in, "I do sir," and all hell breaks loose.

One officer draws down on us as the other rushes up behind my friend, who is sitting down, and jerks his sling up around his neck while saying "What the **** are you doing?" The officer who removed the weapon, later found out to be a major, then disarms my roommate. The other officer is yelling commands for us to stand up and leave the restaurant, saying it is a lawful order and we must obey it or be arrested. After they realized that wasn't going to work, the major walks up in front of the sales counter, holds the rifle in the air and shouts, "Do you want him in here with this damn rifle!?" At which point someone I assume to be the manager, with a terrified look, shakes her head no. Obviously at this time we chose to step outside. Once outside, four more officers show up out of nowhere and begin demanding state ID. Being that I was carrying a handgun I gave them my LTCH though they continued to press for a DL and threatened me with arrest if I didn't present one. My roommates decided to give their DLs. After running all the information they began to tell us how we would never meet a group of guys who were more pro-second amendment than them, all the while attempting to push their beliefs that open carry is wrong. I had recorded the entire thing, up until they gave us our documents back, sadly at that point in time the camera crashed and did not save any of the video.

A couple notes, my roommate that was carrying the XDm, nor myself were ever disarmed, which I applaud them for. I would also like to thank the man sitting behind us that was saying something along the lines of, "It's legal for him to carry that rifle."

    Love ya, man...
    BUT,
I feel compelled to reiterate my feelings on the matter.
People strapping on AR's and AK's and eating in restaurants to make a point will only have a long term result in laws being passed that further limit our freedoms.

Yeah folks I too think carrying long guns in public is just asking to be proned out by cops, but it is still legal and just as much an inalienable right as those of us who carry pistols or even just own guns.

The big issue here if the story we get is all true (if), (no offense OP we just get a lot of fake stories here) is that these police officers were major dick heads for one and two overreacted like panicked little school girls and are NO FRIENDS to our rights and fortify the general image of police that most people have as intentionally intimidating jerks. What if I walked into a police department at low ready because I see guys with guns? Echinacea lily I still wouldn't be breaking the law but I'd probably be dead. The culture of some of these cops is scary!!! Pull and point a loaded gun at citizens first and ask questions later.

I don't think carrying a long gun in public is gonna get you anywhere good but I will always support someone who does it because it is their natural right! And oppressing it is just as discussing as oppressing someone's right not to be a slave. All of the OC long gun stories I read that end badly, do so because of the cops! You might encounter pissed off or uneducated citizens but I've never heard of them disarming the oc'eror pointing their own gun at him. A lot of Cops are the ones that need educated.i understand that sometimes the 911 call can come in wrong, but use discretion! I don't just pull out my gun and point it if I hear someone say give me all your money. Assess!

This is so true. Putting the whole OC vs CC argument aside carrying an AR in a McDonalds will in almost every case lead to a visit by the police. Someone will call 911 because it is not socially accepted behavior even though it is legal, and frankly they don't know if the person is an activist or getting ready to go postal.

Maybe the cop was a jerk, but at some point, the lawmakers are going to listen to law enforcement if they feel this is happening too often and we will loose more rights. In their effort to prove a point, guys who walk around with an AR may very well turn us into a concealed only state. Think of the irony in that.

I long for the day when a person can carry whatever gun s/he chooses. We aren't there yet. In fact when it comes to "assault rifles", we are probably further away from public acceptance than we ever have been...mostly because of the negative press they've received because of the evil ***holes that have used them in their murderous rampages and the other reasons of which we're so familiar. I just have to ask ya KW730--what was the reason your friend chose to carry his AR that day?

I live in Vincennes and I open carry my 1911 all the time in town and never have a problem. Open carrying an AR is asking for trouble especially in a college town. Also if you brought an AR into my restaurant just for fun I would call the police too.... now I'll probably see no carry signs at McDonald's now.

This is what the people say that don't think you should carry your pistol out of the house.
Congratulations on using the anti-gunner argument against yourself.

If it was interrupting my business then yes I would ask them to leave and if they wouldn't I would call the police. I full heartly believe in the right to carry but I don't believe in hurting other people businesses because you wanted to carry an AR for no reason.

Not to mention tactically ignorant. "Who's got the AR?" What kind of question is that?
    Stupid is as stupid does...
Yup, and the cops were pretty stupid.

You didn't say you would ask them to leave above. You said you would call the cops. Leads one to believe you would do that first.

At any rate, what constitutes "interrupting" your business? Three people having a peaceful meal? Is a customer making a complaint all that is necessary to constitute "interruption?" If that's the case, I'm complaining about everybody in the restaurant so I can eat by myself.

It clearly bothered someone, thats why the police were called and that would be interrupting a business. And I apologize about the calling the cops first thing that's why I tried to clarify in the second post.

Also you have to take the cops prescriptive into consideration, if all I heard on the radio was that some guy had an AR at McDonald's I would be prepared for conflict

Thanks for your opinions guys. They mean a lot.
Not sure if sarcasm, but I will put in my two cents

Carrying a long gun in public is only done for one reason, to get a rise out of those around you, including LEOs. I personally hate people like "your friend" Just because you "CAN" do something, doesn't mean you should. When they told you that "They were all pro-2A", they probably are, and were just pissed that you guys pulled a stunt like that. You aren't going to a rally, save the long guns for a rally, you're going to a damn Mcdonalds. OC is awsome in my book, you guys should always OC if it is your method of carry. Did these cops over react? Without a doubt. Did they do it because they were pissed at someone OCing a long gun? Probably. Had you all been ONLY OCing pistols, and the cops showed up. I garentee that this particular incident wouldn't have happened.

I have a question though. Does the individual carrying the rifle have a LTCH? Or is that the reason he WAS carrying a rifle, because he DOESN'T have a LTCH? This would make sense to me. Friend doesn't have a LTCH, and wants to fit in with his OCing friends, so he grabs his AR15 to take to a fast food joint

Yeah, the police coming and barging in, screaming and yellin' like idiots, and using foul language would be disruptive, but it would have been the douches who called them that are responsible, not the OCer.

They peaked in the freakin' window and saw nothing. So without knowing what's going on, they waltz in and ask the bad guy to identify himself? WTF! If it really were a dangerous situation they were bloody stupid to walk in the way they did. OBVIOUSLY, it wasn't that dangerous.
