Like some here in INGO land my father is getting up in age (83). And with what seem be a disheartening trend with these knockout knuckleheads to target the elderly. I worry about my dad. So was wondering, if you where walking down the street with your elderly mom or dad, and someone came up from behind and punched them, what would you do? To be honest I'm not sure, my first thoughts would be to shoot, but with the fact they would be running away at that point, I'm not sure if I would be within my legal rights to do so. With that said, I would have to restrain myself from shooting, just not sure if I can at that point.

My opinion and I'm not a lawyer is that if you shot at a person who was running away you could be charged with some sort of crime and if you hit him or killed him it could be a serious felony charge. Probably best to make sure no more aggression from the punk is coming and then tend to your elderly loved one; try to get a good description and call LEO.

If your SA can't prevent the assault your firearm won't undo it. Shoot someone running away and go directly to jail, followed by prison.

Fortunately, it is unlikely that it will ever happen when you are walking with your Dad, because these animals like to attack helpless old people when they are alone. Also, they usually travel in packs. I carry myself in a way that lets anyone who looks in my eyes know that I will not be trifled with. Being an ex-cop gives me the edge. Also, you are doing right in thinking about this in advance, and you can plan for scenarios like that ahead of time and do whatever you can to prevent them from happening in the first place. It's a sad, sad world we live in now, but with forethought and common sense, we can avoid a lot of the pitfalls many people fall in to. Where you and your father go, where you walk, how you carry yourself, time of day, location, etc. all play in to it. I am glad you are trying to prepare now for the possibility. Hope you come up with an answer that you can live with.
    Thanks,

I pity the fool who tried that with my 82 year old dad. He's a fricken badass to this day.
I have a great story to testify to that fact that happened just this past spring.

If you ever get blind side sucker punched square on it will drop you to your knees. One solid punch can glaze your eyes I do not care who you are.
If it glances or misses the mark then it would be freaking on. Depending on position, clarity of vision etc I would as soon pistol whip the POS to the ground as shoot him/them. A lot less paper work and need for a lawyer.

My dad is 5'5" and about 120lbs. Cancer survivor, lost 2 wife's, and 2 sons. He's just not the same anymore. But I am waiting for the bad ass dad story! I love to hear about old guys kicking butt!!

There is no error in their ways, if there going up and trying to knock someone unconscious, than they deserve to get one right in the center of the eyes who knows if that punch won't kill anyone or not.
