I own a bunch of handguns. I own a .22LR rifle. But I don't own an AR. Can't afford to shoot it.

I did just buy an "AR like" 9mm carbine so I have something to have fun with.
Unless you're rolling your own, ammo is pretty much the same price per round for .223/5.56 as it is for handguns. Only ammo I can think that might be cheaper from the factory is 9mm. I'm thinking .40 and .45 is anywhere from 36-45cents/round

I would love an AR but I dedicate my funds to what I feel I need, and I don't think I need one. What I feel I need is a rifle I can acquire for much less and feed for much less.
ARs are cool but maybe ask yourself why you want it. When that question is answered then see if there is a better/cheaper option to fit the bill, if there isn't then get one!

And get one for me too! :)

Every time I've had the funds, I had other purchases to make. I have a few handguns and shotguns, the only thing I feel I'm missing is a good semi-auto rifle bigger than a .22. I can't say when I'll have the funds to buy one. Maybe tax return I'll look for an SKS, I will not overpay for someone's panic buy weapons.

    :yesway:......Way more bang fer buck......an' they'll run like a raped ape.......an' a big'r hunk o' lead ta boot......

Had one and sold it. Just couldn't warm up to a plastic gun. It just felt like a toy. If I were to get another AR-like gun it would be something in 308.

I went with the Armalite AR10-4. and I love it. I got the Colt AR from a buddy. The Colt is a great weapon and it's been 100% functional and very accurate with the right ammo. I always hated the M16 issued to us in the '60s. POS and we had to trust our life to them. I finally got over it after 40 years and now I'm a fan of the AR platform. They've come a long way since the world fell apart.

Had a few, built a couple, sold 'em all. i just never learned to appreciate the Lego feel. That said, I shot a LWRC piston gun a couple of weeks ago and must say I really liked it, though that's a fat wad-o-dough for an AR.

I happen to have one AR because I believe that every household needs one long arm that is suitable for defending your family and community. Far fetched maybe but I want at least one gun that represents why we have the 2nd admendment. That does not have to be an AR. I choose this particular platform because I did take some training in how to use it and I like the flexibility. I do have an O/U shotgun and a couple .22s but the AR is the only "bad day" long arm that are household has. I do think other platforms would fill this roll equally well but the AR just seems uniquely American to me. If I had a good defensive shotgun, AK, Mini14, M1a,etc I would not feel it neccessary to have the AR.

I was just curious as to reasons why some don't own an AR. I've seen some statements made in other threads about "excuses to buy that first AR". I thought that most folks on guns boards would own at least 1. They're not terribly expensive; they are reliable, accurate, are multipurpose, modular and mags are cheap.

    I dont own one....I own 2.

one is 5.56/.223 and the other is a .300blk. Both built by myself. Ive owned 10 or so over the years. Ive built every one. Everyone should have atleast 1.

Ohh boy. Do you really want the answer? I am an M14/M1 Carbine owner. So I could aford 3 or 4 M16/AR types (will just call it the M16 from here on out)

Because the M16 is a freaking Mattel toy!!!!!!!!!

Direct Impingement. Don't get me started on this. On every shot the rifle is barfing all over it's insides. Who wants this? On the M14 all the dirty stuff is kept in a easily cleanable stainless steel cylinder up front. Not in the internals of your rifle! The M1 Carbine is even better about this with it's short stroke system.

The original caliber 5.56x45 is a damn varmint round. I won't get the caliber argument going again, but I have little faith in this round. I like 30 carbine better then I do like 5.56. Yes I know there are 300s and 6.5/6.8s that fit the AR15 platform, but by the time you pay for them, you might as well moved up to 7.62x51

The M4 has another issue, the barrel is too damn short, even in civilian length at 16 or in mill form at 14.5. You loose too much. CQB, clearing buildings you say? RoE bull honk. Want to know how WWII guys cleared a building? They fired 30 cal THRU the building to "clear it".

After having the M14 and the M1 carbine, I just can't warm up to the M16.

Call me an old school crusty curmudgeon and your right. But I will stay with 30 cal wood and steel rifles. Large bore rifles are what made this country what it is today.
I own rifles that were made to KILL communist heathens. Not wound them.

Never been a fan. Always liked the round, hated the platform. Thought about adding one to the safe just to have since after buying a Tavor I have an abundance of magazines and ammo for one.

I've simply never had any interest in an AR. There are so many other guns I have and would rather have... I do think the functional purpose of the AR is worth satisfying, but there are many other guns that can fill that role and are more appealing to me.

    For what?

I have shotguns and handguns for personal/home defense, competition and target shooting. I shoot both weekly at a range two miles from my house. I cannot justify either the expense or hassle of owning a firearm that I would need to make a hundred mile round trip just to practice with. If I were to purchase a rifle just to say I have one it would be something pretty like a Remington 750 Woodmaster in 308 that I could rub on and polish. :twocents:
