Well, my daughter did not get the room and board scholarship, but after my visit to the campus, I think I'll let her turn down the other schools. That place is amazing and many universities can learn some lessons from them. I've NEVER heard a faculty member refer to themselves at teachers! They said their primary function is teaching and research is secondary. I almost choked when I heard that. They went on to explain how difficult the curriculum is, but their students enjoy the challenge. I guess I can now buy my "RHIT Dad" t-shirt.

Congrats! I'm a Class of 09 grad, but I liked the school so much that I waited until 2010 to graduate ;) (Switched from Civil to CS after sophomore year and had to spend another year making up the difference.)

    Congrats to you and her!

Curious, what did she not like about (if she didn't) Purdue to make RH her first choice?

Purdue wasn't my first choice either. If you compare the size of Purdue's School of Engineering to Rose, they're pretty similar. But the campus, environment, class sizes, attitudes, everything else is very different. Could've graduated from Purdue without debt, but going to Rose was worth the pain and the money.

No, she's 16. The school district refused to change their curriculum and challenge the students. She tested out of two grades and moved ahead. We really tried to keep her in the right grade, but she started getting bored. Our son is experiencing the same thing, but they won't let him pass through because he struggles with ADHD and they said he's not "mature enough" to move to the next grade. We told them that he's bored, but it hasn't helped. The school system in Virginia said they will fix that when he gets here.

One of my good friends at Rose was a girl who was only 16 her freshman year. She did very well and ended up with some great internships and jobs. I'm sure your daughter will do great and end up with a great education and a great job.

How great the experience at Rose is cannot be overstated. The faculty and staff are all dedicated to the success of the students, and that is evident everywhere you go, from the library and learning center to the residence hall staff to the professors and department heads to the academic advisors who guide you through a change of majors to the housekeeping staff who will go above and beyond and do things they aren't even supposed to do just to help students out.

All the greatness notwithstanding, I still have notified the Institute that I will not be sending donations until they update the weapons policy to—at a minimum—allow licensed individuals to carry while on campus.

Congrats again! If there's any way I can help with the transition, I'd be glad to, even though it's been a few years now since I graduated.

What an amazing honor and accomplishment Que. My Stepson is a 2010 ME grad and loved his entire experience there.

PM me your mailing address. I have an 2 1/2 "RHIT Dad" button I'll mail you. Another worthy shirt purchase in the bookstore says " Friends don't let Friends go to Purdue".

I have 3 siblings, a brother in law, and a fiance who are rose alums. Furthermore, my future brother in law is an alum and my future father in law was a department chair there for a good long while. Ive never heard of anyone going there and not being pushed to their limits in at least one area. Your daughter is in for some stressful times, but she will get an education like no other. Be a proud dad, it sounds like your kid deserves it. My reserve unit was in terre haute, so i also have some personal experience there. Also, on a darker note, her car will likely be broken into if she regularly parks off campus. Terre haute can have a nasty little element to it. And id just go ahead and tell her that as far as shes concerned West Terre Haute doesnt exist.

    Team Que has decided wisely!

I'll go to homecoming in the fall and we can sit next to each other during the game.

In fact, we should have in INGO-RHIT gathering then for alums, students, family and friends.

y'all won't ever get anything planned / accomplished. Too much time will be spent on the planning / analysis and then the event will be over. ;)

We won't let the EE or CS guys do any of the planning. MEs, Chem Es, and Civils can actually get results.

That would be awesome! I did find out that she received the Senator Lugar Award, so that will help us out.

On another note, I went to Boot City and found a pair of stirrup motorcycle boots for $49! The very same pair was selling for $125 at a motorcycle rally I went to this weekend. I'll have to get back in there next time and price a nice pair of ostrich skins. :rockwoot:

    Congrats to your daughter.

Just curious what kind of jobs you guys end up with out of RH? I know most are engineers, but what kind of things do you guys do..like buildings, sewers, cars, spaceships?

I had a buddy went there in 87 when we graduated, he was a smart dude...freshman year he was top of class and US Navy visited him, promised him the world as a fighter pilot. He enlisted to find out he had a vision problem that prevented him from seeing certain colors, he never got to fly, done his time and got out. Never went back to RH.......and now he runs financing at a well known car dealership.

Does RH produce any racing engineers? I have heard IUPUI has a great school for racing engineers.

It depends on the major and the graduate. There are a lot of engineers, scientists, professors, etc. like you would expect, but there are also a lot of physicians, lawyers, judges, MBAs, entrepreneurs of all kinds, military, you name it.

Yes, there are guys who have gone into racing. For instance, Tim Cindric is the president of Penske Performance Racing. He used to be the team manager for Bobby Rahal's racing team.

Then there are the very, very few who have hit bumps in the road they did not expect and have to reinvent themselves. I'm one of those. No one will even interview me for an entry level engineering job at this point, so I had to take an alternate path. I'm an online account manager at a big company that sells tools and services for student assessment. How did Rose-Hulman help me with that? Well, the name recognition didn't do much, but I still have the communication skills I developed while I was there, which have served me well in all aspects of life. I also have my problem solving and critical thinking skills, which I can apply to the challenges of any job, including the one I hold now. Before this, I taught physics and math at Ivy Tech. Again, the part of my background that was most helpful wasn't the long forgotten technical, scientific, and math knowledge I had long ago, but the ability to communicate effectively, manage projects, and solve problems.

It may sound like hubris to someone who doesn't understand how they prepare the kids there, but the process they all undergo prepares them for just about anything. They can't learn everything they need to know for any job, much less all jobs, but they learn how to learn. They learn how to teach themselves new things as efficiently and thoroughly as possible. They learn how to manage time and other resources to maximize their success.

At risk of repeating myself, they are all good communicators when they graduate, or at the very least much better than they would have been had they not gone to Rose-Hulman. To some, it comes easily and to others, well, it's forced upon them. It's the one thing that is stressed from day one, regardless of your major or interest. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter how smart you are or what you know if you can't communicate those ideas and concepts effectively to others.

That sounds like a fantastic idea... count me in!!

We just have to keep the EEs and CS guys out of the planning stage! AHAHAH

Congratulations to your daughter! Especially at such a young age! Just tell her to watch out for Sophomore year, and don't fall for any of that "integrated ciriculum" stuff Freshman year.

    I still have nightmares...

Junior and Senior year are a breeze after that.

Like Rhino said...RH alumni are in all sorts of positions...from CEO's, to VP's of research, etc. Many start with engineering and then move into leadership positions.

A listing of a few of my classmates from class of 2001:

VP of a major medical device manufacturer
Program Manager for one of the NASA Mars Rovers
    Operations Manager for Lilly
CEO of his own consulting company after 10+ years with some well known firms like Anderson and Kinsey
Neuro Surgeon (this guy just liked to go to school and rack up student loans I think, as he was a Chem E undergrad, then Bio-Med graduate student at RHIT, BEFORE going to med-school)

Personally, I went back to IU a few years ago to get my MBA, and am responsible for a pretty decent size engineering team for a major Indiana-based diesel engine manufacturer.

Regarding racing engineers, does the name "Hulman" ring a bell with any well known race track? ;)
