After they backed Mitt Romney who was for a assault weapons ban that he passed as governor I will never join them. They should have backed a pro gun candidate not a anti gun candidate.

For the same amount you can also get a membership for Gun Owner's of America and really put your money to work. They no long offer Lifetime emberships but the money works harder there for sure. Gun Owner's of America

I am a member of GOA, a lifetime member of the JFPO amd Endowment Life at NRA (before I knoew any better and back when it was LOT more expensive to eise to such a level as well)

What exactly does a sponsor do?

    Nothing much.
In some past promotions the discounted memberships were only offered to "friends and family" of current life members.
A life member was suppose to "sponsor" a friend or family member. This amounted to nothing more than supplying my life membership number along with the friend/family's application for life membership.

Some later promotions dropped this requirement.
I don't know if the "sponsorship" rule applies this go around or not.

If it does, and you would like a sponsor, I am willing to do so.

The NRA has many functions, they are not single faceted. Safety programs, training, PR, sanctioning, Publications, Studies for hunting rights and regulations, legal assistance, insurance, range engineering, civil and criminal legislation and other things as well as political battles. It is pretty hard to be a gun owner and not benefit from NRA work.

Most people do not base their decisions on the whole picture. The NRA has the same trouble we all do. Sometimes the choice is not good and bad, it is bad and worse. Every single function is enough for me to support financially. GOA is straight political. I support them. If a person does not like a particular organization for any reason, that is alright. The important thing is that each gun owner do something. $20 bucks does not cover the battle for a year. You have to be involved all year, write letters, call congressmen, file complaints with local authorities. Sign onto class action lawsuits. Fund those on the front line doing the work you cannot do, like lawyers taking matters to the courts. Maybe you will think of something I left out.

    Well stated.
I tried to rep you, but I need to spread the love around first I guess.

I guess I measure effectiveness by how much the libs and the media hate a gun group. I have never heard a liberal politician complain or whine about any gun group other than the NRA. That is where my support goes.

The GOA is straight political which is what I want and support. The NRA also tends to be hunter orients as well as willing to compromise. I don't nat support the NRA and yes, they have the name recognition due to being more adept at advertising (and paying for it) to make more money. The NRA excels at raising TAXABLE donations and selling branded and marked for because of it merchandise so you can show all your friends you are doing something. GOA has a few shirts and hats and a sticker or two but spending money on junk takes away from the cause so they don't apend a lot on it either. The donations to the GA are therefore TAX DEDUCIBLE.

The NRA had lobby duties forced on them by being the only organization about guns then. They never did get all that good at it either but they do try. The GOA is only about fighting for our rights so that is what they are good at. Knowing that they thought the NFA was so obviously going to be struck down by SCOTUS that they never showed up for the trial with a Court that WOULD have done so is the first time it made me mad but I jept with them. The GOA would never have an office holder say "AR-15's have no place in civilian hands. You can't even hunt with them." If it did happen the guy would at least loose his job at the GOA. When this happened at the NRA a few years ago the guy lost his other jobs and advertising contracts but the NRA not only kept him on but spent a fair bit of money getting him re-elected to the board in his defense ads. For the record THAT was the event that made me so angry with the NRAtaht I stopped supporting them

I do think the NRA does one thing good and that is low cost loans for renovating smaller ranges and they also provide a lot of good training for firearms enthusiasts. The GOA doesn't even have that sort of thing other than court support, which the NRA also does. So I do think the NRA provides a lot of good services, I am just saying they don't do very well lobbying or even supporting good cases in the courts, They are really picky about those cases they will take and rarely take one until it will also give them a lot of free advertising in the news.

Just wanted to say all this, I know it will make no difference and the NRA will continue to make money hand over fist.

Is this a great country or what?
I can promote a cause I see fit, and you have the right to chime in with your thoughts.
We have differing opinions, but we have equal rights to express them without fear of reprisal.

"I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend with my life, your right to say it..."

You can tell then not to send any of that to you and they won't.
The NRA will take you off the mailing list and the GOA doesn't send out much in the first place.

I joined NRA this year and and was supposed to get a NRA duffle bag. A couple months after joining they sent out a card with instructions that said if I wanted the bag I needed to send the card in. I checked the box on the application form when I joined in the first place. If I hadn't read the info that was sent to me and just threw it away with the rest of the crap they send me I would had gotten jipped out of my duffle bag.
