Atfter hearing the sad news of the passing of INGOer RGriff99, I was reminded of the duty we all owe our fellow man.

For those that aren't aware, Rgriff99 spent months in the hospital awaiting a lung donor. The circumstances could be different, but based on info posted here, he passed away waiting for the right donor.

I would ask that we all do two things. Both are painless and easy to do.

First, become a registered organ donor. It's quick and easy. And besides, by the time your organs are ready to come out, you won't care anymore. Just make sure you also talk it over with your family and friends so they know your wishes ahead of time.

Second, join the bone marrow registry. It's free, painless (just a quick cheek swab in the comfort of your home via a kit they mail to you), and easy to join And given today's technology if you are called to donate it's not nearly as brutal as it once was. In fact, in many cases you can donate (if called) by going through a similar procedure to donating plasma. It's no longer a guarantee of going under the knife to harvest marrow.

You can sign up here... HomePage If you are a minority it is especially important as the best matches are within your own race. (And minorities are not well represented according to be the match)

I'm already in on both. Come on INGO, join me!

I didn't know RGriff99, but it's always sad to hear about the loss of a community member.

A good reminder about donation. I'm already an organ donor but wasn't aware of the bone marrow registry. I'll have to look into it.

Yeah, and the registry is free. They send you a packet in the mail on request. Do a quick cheek swab and put it in a prepaid envelope. They ask you to donate to cover the cost of your test but it is not required, and they dont ever nag you for money over time like other orgs do. (Lookin at you NRA!!!!)

    What he said.

I've always felt that if something were to happen to me, seeing as how I'm already dead- it's better if someone can get some use out of my organs.

Yep. Being buried/cremated with your organs makes as much sense as being buried with your guns. Better somebody else uses them when you are gone than have them gone with you.

As I stated in the thread, I am an in remission survivor of the Big "C" so I am not allowed. No one would want my parts.
    I would if I could.

Already signed up to be an Organ Donor. Drivers License reflects that.

Will look into The Bone marrow thing as well.

Sorry to hear about RGriff... hope he had family and friends with him.

As a diabetic who also has glaucoma and hep C, I cannot be an organ donor. I was though before I fell apart. :) Diabetics aren't supposed to be organ donors, people with glaucoma can't donate their eyes and hep c sort of poison the ho body. May conditions and also medications that you may take regularly preclude donation as well so before signing up, make sure you can. Sure, they will screen for problems but they did that with the blood I got hep c from too so mistakes are made in a ruch to save your parts so make those errors unlikely by making sure of your own organs eligibility BEFORE signing up.

Wonder if my cancer precludes me from being a donor.

I've always been a donor. In fact, I'd like to be tossed out into the woods to decompose, but I don't think they allow that anymore.

If you donate your body to science, There's a chance that you can be a cadaver at a mock crime scene, is that close enough!?
