I tried to revive and old thread but all them seem to disintegrate into a battery life discussion and what happens when you are defending your home with a dead battery in your red dot.

    So, here is my disclaimer::)

This is will be a combat style AR built for 3-gun
    I may never shoot a 3-gun competition
But I may want to some day and then I will be glad I at least have the rifle part
I will not use this for home defense. I have a shotgun and a pistol for those duties. Thank-you Mr. Biden, lol.
I am not going to be deployed to a war zone as I am not in the military.(Thank-you to those who serve, I do sincerely appreciate it) My son is an Airman.
I am not in law enforcement.
I am not going to carry it into Chipotle's.
As long as the batteries will make it through a 3-gun match without replacing, battery life is not an issue for me. Though I would carry spares.

So I was going to go with a 1-4 magnified scope but decided that my eyes will work better with a red dot. I am looking at Eotech's because I kinda like the reticle on them. But there are many choices and this is where you come in.

Which one would you use and why? I am okay with buying once, crying once. So unless a Vortex/Burris/Primary Arms, etc. is better, than I am not interested if it is just to save money.

    Thanks!

I bought one for the same reason as you seem to have: plinking now and maybe something more later.

I decided to buy the one that I found a deal on. It is a 512.A65 that I got for $275 from a dealer. It was "used" but hadn't been mounted. The guy bought it and then brought it back the next day because someone convinced him he needed night vision. I just happened to be there the day he brought it back.

I would probably go with the 512. takes AA batterys and will last plenty long for 3 gun.

If you are interested in shooting some 3 gun this year but dont have your gear sorted please shoot a PM my way. We've got some guys getting to gether and will have plenty of left over stuff so we can all throw some lead down range

I love my 512. A great red dot sight.

Until I bought a $70 (on sale) Bushnell TRS-25. It works just fine too and is a lot smaller. It just works. I haven't been able to stop it from working.

    I have the 512 on a AR-10 and the TRS-25 on a PTR-91.

FWIW. Neither rifle or sight have been exposed to actual combat. Nor have I with them. And I want that status to continue. I would really like to shoot some three gun...Or two gun....

EXPS2, it will co-witness with iron sights if needed. I have had them with multiple dots and hated them, just a single dot is perfect. Very strong sight that stays put and works.

I personally find the big ring distracting. they used to make a single dot version...

people talk about using the big ring for up-close work and how easy it is to center up on targets, etc, but for me, by the time I think about holdovers up close, it's just too much going on.... I don't want to center a head shot in the ring, I want to hold a dot at the top of the paper... that's more likely to get it in the A box.

I know you didn't want to hear about batts, but the aimpoint IS nice due to battery usage. My EOTech auto-shut-off on me in the middle of a stage once. I ran fixed back-up irons so I just had to lower my head a touch and keep shooting, but something to consider, even from a gamer perspective. My EOTech is the N-cell version and every time I take that gun out of the safe it's blinking at me that the batts are dying... the extra cost of the aimpoint would have pd for itself in batts many yrs ago... Im' pretty sure the EOT draws juice even when off (which is why it can use 'soft' switches vs actual mechanical ones). If you do use one for 3 gun, plan to put new batts in before each match.

When the EOT batts are getting low, the reticle blinks between dim/bright.... distracting when in the middle of a stage...

I like the view through the EOTech better than the AP tube, but that's about the only negative of the AP.

FWIW, I love my EOTech 512s for nighttime varmint work at the ranch as far as seeing through them along with the light is concerned. I love the field of view. I run lithium AAs in them and haven't had any issues with not having battery when I need them, I just make it a habit to change them once a year or so.

What I don't like is having to fumble with turning them on each time I need to use them, because when something is chasing chickens around the yard I have about five seconds before whatever it is skedaddles and turning on the EOTech and confirming it is at the right brightness level has cost me several shots.

I have several Aimpoints and while I don't like the constricted FOV, I do like the fact that they are just on. So I'm going to be selling my 512s, relatively cheap.

I just ordered a Holosun RDS to give it a try, and once I sell my EOTechs I'll be getting another Aimpoint PRO for the varmint gun.

Not quite ready to buy, but PM me the details when you are ready to sell one. I've got another AR that I have to sell first. Thanks.

Hey I would be interested in taking one of those 512's off your hands if you are selling them. PM me with details if you want to get rid of one.

I have to pull them off the guns, clean 'em and dig up the boxes for them. I hadn't really intended to do this until after the guns I have in the classifieds have sold (because those are funding the Aimpoint PRO I am buying and I don't want my varmint guns without eyes in the meantime), but I'll take a look into it tonight and pm you.

I like the reticle of the EOTech (EXPS2 for me) but I really like the size/weight of an Aimpoint Micro. The EXPS is the smallest version with a single perpendicular A123 battery and QD raised base for lower 1/3 cowitness built in.

As a owner/user of both in the military and civilian i have to go with the Aimpoint, but it's close. I like the Aimpoint because i know it will always be on, but i do like the FOV better with the Eotech. As with anything it's personal preference.

Vortex just released a budget friendly illuminated 1-6x. You might want to check that out too. I've had the 1-4 pst and loved it, but in the end, I wanted something with more magnification.

Is it out yet? I saw that the other day and was wondering how they got it "budget".

Alan (A&A Optics) said a few weeks back that he thought they'd be on shelves by March sometime. I'm sure the time frame will be more accurate after SHOT Show. Here's a brief overview from SHOT Show. I really want to look through one of these, if the glass is anything like the Viper PST I may be switching my optic.

Look at the Burris LRS 1-4. It has an illuminated reticle at a push of the button and is an awesome scope. You'll enjoy the magnification especially bc you mentioned your eyes aren't the best
