Apparently she noticed the guy, but took no action. Note to self, and others, situational awareness is only as good as your plan to exit the situation, or at least change the situation. I know I'll work on this part of it more now.

It sounds like the actual assault happened at her vehicle instead of at the ATM itself. At what distance do the ATM cameras become ineffective? I wonder if there were parking lot cameras.

There has to be a better way to do ATM's to make them more secure. The gears in my head are spinning. I went to the ATM at the Greenwood PNC yesterday. It is normally a drive up ATM, but is way to low for most cars, so a lot of people simply park and walk up to the ATM. I was at this same ATM last summer and had a bad feeling so I decided to drive away. One idea might be to make ATM's adjustable height and maybe extend out to be closer to a car window? How about an enclosure, about the size of a bus stop shelter where you can pull up, block the opening with the side of your car, and have enough room to step out of the car and use the ATM. How about putting a big red panic button by the ATM. Crazy ideas, but I'm just thinkin. Don't throw stones, I am not suggesting that any of these ideas are better than carrying and being able to defend yourself.

And this perp is described as....?

And WHERE this happened could actually help catch him, as somebody might have seen something.

But the media seems more interested in the sensationalism of stories like this than actually helping catch the perp.

Door locked and engine running with tranny in drive or in first gear. Keep an eye one the mirrors as well. If someone tries anything, gun it. Run his ass over. Call the cops from a mile away....Being in a car is better than on foot.

Technique matters, but sometimes you also just need to avoid the situation and look for another ATM.

I sometimes drop my bank deposits off late at night, but there are times where I decide it's not worth it and just keep on going.

For a while, I had my black lab/shepherd mix with me. She did a "first out/last in" while I operated the back door remote.

If you do use the drive-through, another "absolute" to follow during off-hours is to not pull up to the machine if there is a car in front or behind you. With a bystander blocking you on one end, someone can easily block you on the other.

Also note the perp distracted her by "asking for directions".

Let me just put a plug in here for the Paladin Combatives class I took a few months ago. We talked and practiced a lot of scenarios regarding being approached by strangers and how you avoid getting sucked into this kind of confrontation. After that class, I handle the "direction" and "I just need something" people a bit differently than I used to.

Even with the noted precautions, you are sitting stationary with the window down. Focused on your banking, not the blind spots, a surprise reach in the window can have complete control of you with or without weapons.

Care to elaborate? Cliffs notes edition is fine.

Clearly this woman has not been listening to the leftist narrative on how to handle a violent and armed criminal. The proper procedure is, as you'll recall:

    1) Politely ask the would-be criminal to stand by.
    2) Call 911 and give them a complete rundown of the situation.
    3) Wait until LE arrives and disarms the criminal.

Seriously, I'm not intending to make light of this unfortunate woman's injuries. She's a victim of a violent criminal, and ARMED criminal since a knife can clearly be used as a weapon. Had she been armed the outcome might well have been different. At least she would have had a chance against a presumably stronger and armed attacker.

Criminals just have not been getting the word that they're not supposed to be in a hurry and they need to wait for the victim to call 911 and the police to arrive.

That's absurd, of course, since criminals are by definition criminals and they don't care about laws or licenses to carry guns, or anything like that.

I doubt we'll hear any statement from the Misguided Moms group or Shannon Watts since this doesn't fit into their bizarre scheme of things. But since their efforts have been 100% against LAWFUL gun owners and 0% against criminals, I must conclude that they really aren't interested in gun safety or disarming criminals but rather just want to get guns out of the hands of lawful citizens. In other words, they are WOMEN HATERS!
