I stopped by the new Cabela's in Noblesville to check it out (really nice store) and stopped by the knife counter. They had a few bechmades, spydercos, and a bunch of kershaws. The folks working it are completely ignorant to knifes. They told me that benchmades are the only ones who use s30v, and tried to sell me a kershaw claiming it had d2 steel when it had 8CR. Don't trust anything they say! :dunno:

I have a few Kershaws with D-2 cutting edges...

But you'll find that almost all big-box-store employees are...just employees. Not experts.

I over heard similar things while I was there, Reminded me of when I was at Gander and over heard the guy at the gun counter trying to sell a guy a Remington 870 express for like $600.

I was impressed by the selection they have there though. 2 or 3 full isles of blades plus the counter. I wouldn't say the prices were competitive but hey its cabelas.

So you are expecting a department store employee who has been on the job for 3 weeks to know everything about knives?

    Just saying....

not knowing everything about knives is one thing, giving false info is another.

Id much rather them say, Im not familiar with this knife then tell me some random info they just made up.

It's a free market and anyone is free to charge as they wish, no arguments from me on that. I'm just stating an opinion, I'm sure there are folks who will buy from them as loyal Cabela's shoppers. To each their own.

I didn't think their .22 prices were horrible from what I saw, and they had a fair amount in stock. I understand Wal-Mart is still the one to beat on bulk .22 price, but I also understand they have a hard time keeping it on the shelf.

You are correct on all points. Still seems the retirees will stand in line before opening and take their booty to the nearest LGS for a profit that I can't live on...

The key to buying a knife at a place like Cabelas, is patience. Go to cabelas and fondle them. Once you find the one want, write down the model number and leave the store. Now call up brad and buy it a whole lot cheaper than cabelas. Problem solved. If you are patient enough to wait a couple days to get it.

This practice is known as "show rooming" and high priced stores like Cabela's really seem to encourage this as they don't care to deal on price. Gander Mountain is another that plays the same game.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, it's not as though that high price comes with commensurate service and product knowledge. Most people in these stores are far from experts in their respective selling arenas and it shows if you're a remotely informed consumer.

Brad can tell you whatever you could ever think of wanting to know about anything he's selling, and he will get the answer for you if he's not sure.

It is very common for people to come to the shows not just to the stores and fondle knives to get first hand on what the knife looks like and feels like to buy on line. This happens a lot. Nothing you can do about that. One difference though is when you come to the show that Brad or myself is at and ask a question about one of our knives I can tell you that the answer will be correct and informative. You may not get that from a store employee who basically is there for a paycheck.

Not super surprised at the pricing structure, when I went a couple weeks ago the Cabelas seemed to be adhering to manufacturers suggested retail (AKA too high) quite strictly. But to people who dont know any better and have never gotten to see quality knives like that they may think they are getting a good deal. Gander Mountain does the same exact thing with their benchmades.
