1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88, my first car's filler was behind the plate. Miss that big ol brown land yacht.

I had 1972 USS Delta 88 with a 455 Rocket and TH400 trans. That baby didn't start riding at its best until 70 mph.
It just kind a floated like it was on a cloud of air. That was easily an eight passenger car.

When a teenager it was always easy enough to find a job pumping gas at a local......wait for it.......Service Station. usually a dollar an hour to pump gas, clean the screens and check the oil. Sweeping the bays and the lot when trffic was down. Oil changes as well. Good times.
4 pumps, 2 bays was the common at the time. Inside if 4 blocks there were 6 stations of different brands and everyone would work on your car. Then there was Imperial and United. Those have Morphed into the Speedway gas and goes we see now.

I remember the gas wars that had leaded (no un-leaded then) premium at 26 cents a gallon.

    Man how times have changed.

    The days of Sunoco 260.:oldwise:

Yes, plus the attendant checked your oil, cleaned your windshield, and they had "give aways" - I bought at a Texaco station and while still living at parents home supplied my Mom with a complete set of kitchen glasses ( beverage ).

Also had owner/attendant at a local Shell station (well known to drink at work & always have a gun on him & others stashed within arms reach ) pull a derringer out of his pocket while pumping my gas and start waiving it in my face, cussing about the "damn kids these days" ( in the 60's). Oh, also had a cigarette ( yes it was lit as was he ) dangling from his mouth the whole time. First time had a gun pointed at me and scared me s***less.
What'd you do that he pulled a gun on you?

I'm not old enough to have ever experienced these things. What happened to service stations? Devaluation of the dollar?

I used to be a pump jockey and station mechanic when I was a kid a long, long time ago. I remember flipping up the left tail light on the 55 Cadillacs and dropping the left tail light on the 56 Chevy's to fill them up and no, I wasn't pumping gas in the 50's. :) The 57 Chevys had a door above the left tail light and I also remember popping up the trunk lids on VW's to fill them up as well. I also had my fair share of cars that filled up behind the license plate. I can still smell the strong, leaded gas fumes when filling all of those cars up.

That reminds me of the DX stations before they combined with Sinclair. I remember bugging Dad to get 10 fill ups so I could get the Model A race cars and track set. I wonder what ever happened to the race set.

I remember that as well. DX always had the great toys. I remember they used to have an "aquacar" available as well.
