Although I would wish to retain the option to self drive, allowing the car to do the grind say from Columbus to Cleveland would be nice. Have made that drive probably 10000 times.

What would really sell me would be in the city if, when the light goes green, there was only a millisecond of elapsed time before P1 begins to roll and everybody rolls simultaneously - at least triple the cars could clear an intersection each cycle :D

I'm sure there's redundancies built in to the electronics. I am also sure human error causes a lot of crashes. Sure, robots will crash...but probably way less than people.

Just as an aside and a half thread jack, my experience with industrial robots is that the likelihood of them making a mistake and "just crashing" is less than me winning the Powerball 100 times. They do what humans tell them to do. They crash into things humans put in their way. They malfunction when humans don't maintain or abuse the subsystems around them.

Even if there was 100% success rate with the autonomous cars, I'd still be against them.

I enjoy driving. However I don't enjoy driving to and from work. I hate it. My commute is ~1 hour each way. And then there's spaghetti junction in Louisville. Yeah, I'd go for one of those contraptions. Then I could do INGO while letting the car drive me to work. Hell yeah.

I don't care if somebody wants to buy one. Free markets and all that.

I just get the half feeling that they'll eventually be a requirement knowing how our government works.

    Curses potentially proven wrong. . . . .again!
Well you're off the hook this time.... I came across a story about a team that was trying to run a special built diesel car cross country on one tank, but couldn't find out if they made it or not as my mind started wandering and I got bored.... Turns out proving you wrong wasn't that big of a deal after all... :):

I work on industrial instrumentation (sensors) and control systems.
Humans beat the electronics most of the time.
The only gain is, the electronics control a lot of repetitive tasks, allowing less humans to be paid.

Just think, with self driving cars there will be no need for us to buy auto insurance. Yeah I am sure insurance companies will go along with this.

Crashes would be reduced but not eliminated...but even if they were there's theft, vandalism, hail damage, etc. I'm figuring I'd still insure my truck even if it drove itself.

something to consider is your smart car will make decisions based on the best choice for a bad situation. Example: a tree falls over into the street. If the car decides to veer right, you go over a cliff and die. If the car veers left, it drives through a daycare. Your car will do the math and choose to kill you ala Maximum Overdrive. I prefer to make my own decisions. I'll park my car on an infants face.
