Police responding...you mean good guys with a gun? Too bad it was a gun-free zone, it may have ended better, and quicker.

While it may not have been the best idea, at least he tried to help. That's something that doesn't happen too often let alone two brave, good people in the same place at the same time.

    Outside the coup
This incident should be a poster child.

Bad guys violate the rules & law doing bad things. Good guy with good intentions but lacking the proper tools tries to help, fails and loses his life trying. Good guy WITH the proper tools succeeds in taking one of the bad guys out of the fight and causes the other one to flee. I don't know how much more clear it can be.

It's a shame the first good guy lost his life trying to help.

I wonder it if was these guys: Smash and grab robbery at jewelry store in South Park Mall | KABB

[STRIKE]Same jewelry store[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]chain[/STRIKE], different jewelry store different mall. (whoops - read too fast).

I don't go to malls often, but the ones I have been to in San Antonio have not been posted against licensed carry.

ETA: I mean posted against concealed licensed carry, South Park doesn't allow open carry.

    Outside the coup
An unarmed man attempted to stop the robbery and was shot and killed. A second man pulled out his concealed weapon and shot one of the suspects. The second suspect fled the scene, shooting as he ran. Their condition has not been released.

Did the guy think he was Batman or something?

Man killed trying to stop robbery at Rolling Oaks Mall in San Antonio | WOAI

There could have been any number of reasons. We won't know until it's over what happened. He could have been backed into a corner by them, they could have been threatening a family member or someone else, one article said there was a pregnant woman that went into labor. They could have been threatening to kill her. All kinds of reasons.

It is a shame, but I think the news outlets will focus on the the bad guys with guns angle rather than the good guy with a gun who helped the situation. The good guy without a gun will be a martyr showing what bad guys with guns can do. I just hope no one else has to lose his or her life for two men's greed!

Anybody want to venture a guess as to their firearms policy?

No, he was a man that thought more of everyone else, than himself! While I agree he should have been armed, how dare you demean him for doing the RIGHT thing?

How dare I? That's a bit over the top. Rule #1 of a gunfight is, "Bring a gun." Multiple armed bad guys? It doesn't take much risk assessment to realize this is a bad choice. When you can choose the time and the place of the fight you can also choose not to engage.

If you look at the link that Kelly and I both posted earlier in this thread, it's been updated with more detail than the link that Joe was so good to post. You'll see that the man who initially tired to stop the robbery and sadly lost his life was Jonathon Murphy, a retired Marine. I have to agree with SAPD chief that this whole thing was "absolutely senseless."

Although you intend this to bash and demean the dead citizen, this type of Monday morning quarterbacking and criticism of a well-intentioned citizen reflects upon you.
