Speaking of crank, it's about the only thing that is homemade anymore...
Same here. Dad would buy a big block of ice and he would chip it with an ice pick and add it to the bucket (with rock salt) while I worked the crank. We usually made strawberry ice cream.
With strawberry's from the garden...........
Hand-cranked!! Hand-cranked!!
Yup. I did that by mistake one time by forgetting to add sugar to the strawberry batch I made. The guests did not have the usual look of pleasure when I sat down with my bowl.......
I have recently declared war on sugar....
I'm OK invoking technology from 1890 if it means I make ice cream more often.
My preferred homemade flavor is chocolate cayenne. A little sweet, a little heat.
My old favorite - lime sherbet hot fudge sundae. Also tart, cold and hot, but not as extreme.I ate in a restaurant in Albuquerque that had a palate cleanser between two courses that had house-made grapefruit sherbert with habaneros. Tart, cold, and hot. It was excellent, and I will probably never eat it again. :-(
50% more cat hair if it's homemade.
Make your own natural vanilla extract - two vanilla beans and a fifth of vodka.
Note:
You'll need the ENTIRE bean pod. Not just the little bean innards. And you'll also need time. Like months.

.The pods are actually labeled as beans in the store. I have this in my cabinet and use it all the time.
