    Hi Doug--

Fair challenge. I'm not proud of this...but I've been a passive "lurker" on this forum for a while. I have learned so much doing this, but I've never been one to really engage in on-line forums and social media. However, reading what was posted about the incident at Atterbury last weekend motivated me. What was described versus what I observed/experienced were so incongruous that I felt the need to join and provide my input for the first time. I didn't want the group of shooters to get an unfair reputation, based on the original post, if there is anyone on this forum that knows them and recognizes them based on the description of the incident (e.g., probably not a lot of people shooting a 338 LM at Atterbury). Again...not proud of being a lurker in the past, but I am motivated to continue to participate in this forum. Thanks.

A kind, well worded, articulated answer. Thank you sir.

Perhaps now you will be so inclined to come out of the shadows and join us in the light.
Or is that come out of the light and join us in the shadows...?

Anywho's, welcome aboard and it seems that "those who knew him" didn't know him so well after all, maybe?

    Regards,

    Doug

    Howdy Zed.
    Welcome to INGO.
Lurk at your convenience. Don't get in any hurry to get your quality posts in. I've been here for a long time and doubt I have the quality post count I need. No cat pun intended.

As I reflect on this thread, and the situation that precipitated it, I do find this to be a very interesting topic. If you ignore the distraction of Indycar's self-detonation, there still appears to be a polarization around the use of muzzle brakes at the gun range. Again...probably no absolute right or wrongs, but this thread highlights the potential need for shooters to consider their equipment and how it functions...leading (hopefully) to consideration on the downstream impact on others. It's everyone's responsibility to be good stewards of the sport.

    Well said.

I think we could all do well to try to treat our fellow shooting enthusiasts as we would like to be treated.

And because you don't HAVE to doesn't mean you CAN'T.
I really don't like being in the presence of homosexuals, but I love to vacation in Key West Florida. When I go there I know there will be homosexuals around me. I don't jump all over them and tell them they don't have a right to be there, they're not breaking any rules if I want to go to key west, that's just what I have to deal with. If you want to go to a gun range you're going to have to deal with loud noises and everything that goes along with that, flying brass, concussion from large caliber weapons with brakes on them.
Range time, just like vacations, is expensive. The other people paid for their time, they get to be there.

In this all of my AR's have brakes on them. Mostly Jerry Miculik (Sp) designs. 1 is a custom. I seldom if ever run them indoors. When I do get on the line with someone it is at a Ingo gathering or private shoot and I make all aware. At the private gatherings (:shady: pants optional) everyone already knows and I catch a butt load of crap (in good fun) about it. Especially for the 10.5" and the .308.

I am really not a fan of using a public range. I like to know who I am on the line with. Situations such as this one are 1 of the reasons why. Over bearing RO's are another. I am all for safety and RO's do a thankless job. In this they can not get on a power trip unless they see the need.

    LOLWUT?

...and what's the fee at Atterbury? At Roush Lake it's $4 for the day.

$7 an hour with every 15 or 30 minutes being a cease fire. Cease fires can get a little out of hand esp when shooters repeatedly go to the bench or make multiple trips downrange.
Hmm. Essentially they're the same ranges, but without DNR subsidies, right?

I shoot at Atterbury often and always enjoy my time there. They are more militant about safety than most ranges I have had experience with...but I don't really mind. A day at the range throwing copper is always good in my opinion...and my preference is for the RO's to take safety too seriously, rather than the opposite. I agree that their pro shop isn't half bad.

I still hate to see anyone go, I think the forum is better when we have people that disagree.

I agree. It's no fun without being able to play let-destroy-your-liberal-argument.

Joking aside, groupthink from a self-reinforcing confirmation bias is something I consider a real threat.

I sympathize a bit with the OP. Even my lowly DDM4 with the stupid "muzzle climb mitigator" for all the TactiBeard competitor types will wear me out indoors. It's not even a real brake. I will be removing it in favor of something with less blast.

I shouldn't develop a flinch from shooting 5.56, but that stupid muzzle device is trying to give me one.

I have little patience for people who view a public area as their own private area. Get courtesy and basic civility can go a long way.

I'm looking into a Blast Forwarding Device as a way to reduce the blast because the demos make it look like a good idea.
