BBI, To be honest I am not sure either. I just know the Detective called and said we may have to go to Marion County to file charges since the stolen items are being sent to the suspects house in Marion County, Hendricks County can't prosecute her. I really didn't want to deal with that and asked him if report can just be given to an IMPD Detective and he said if I knew someone to have them call him direct. I can provide you with the Detectives direct number and extension, he said he would send IMPD the file. He is still trying to get the original person who took it to spin her web of lies, he has interviewed her twice. I think he just needs someone to interview the suspect in Indianapolis that he has name, shipping address which is next door to her home address, cell phone number. Not sure why he can't do that....unless it is a jurisdiction thing. I almost bet if the Indianapolis person thinks they are gonna get charged, they will rat on our local suspect who originally took it. Thanks for your help.

There's no jurisdiction issue for police, we all have state wide authority. Sounds more like he just needs to get with our prosecutor's office.

Years ago I found the lack of interest in pursuing these matters evident. I had my debit card used to make purchases to Lillian Vernon, a catalog store. Purchases were made and a deferred payment arrangement delayed me finding out. Yes, the bank replenished my funds... Internal fraud security at Lillian Vernon had no interest; however, after several calls I found a person who coughed up some information to where the packages were being sent. Since it was across state lines, no one in law enforcement had an interest. I could offer name used and address. Neither state agency wanted to be involved past a report level. I'm not sure how it happened; but, after some days of observation in the other state all the vehicles at the address seemed to suffer a loss of windows and tires.

The prosecutor may believe that the department is spread too thin.

The Officer may have some really serious stuff on his plate so that he doesn't have the resources to commit to this case.

There could be a lot of reasons, But I vote DONUTS!:):

Please, it is meant in fun. Did the detective have a glazed look in his eyes?

    Sorry I can't help myself.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem... if no one else can help... and if you can find them... maybe you can hire... Lurk Team 6

When that happens, the victim is made whole by the bank, the bank become the de facto victim and they don't bother with follow through. At least this is according to Indy prosecutors. Sad but current reality. I had my debit card number used overseas. Credit Union caught it early and let me know. I filled out a form and they credited the money back to my account. Nothing else can be done.

This. My wife got hit, and the bank returned the money. I asked if they were going to press charges. They said it wasn't worth the effort since it wasn't that much. Personally, $1,800 seems worth going after.

Often? More like we care about it a lot but have to focus on more serious crimes. Thanks for telling me my opinion though.

Guess I should have added “care to investigate”. The way I see it the issues the police address should be the ones that the public feel are important. Fraud and identify theft are huge hassles. Pot smoking/growing is not. But look at the amount of resources given to the two.

If a citizen has a crime against us, where does the police/prosecutor have authority to refuse to investigate it? I understand there’s is more crime than investigators, but I don’t see efforts made to expand into areas we have needs. Granted, i’m Not paying all that close of attention, i’m Just hearing crickets when I report crimes that happen to me and it’s very irritating. It can be the difference between a Successful business And a failed business.

No, you are forgetting the second victim. the retailer is screwed. This is why I think the police don’t investigate. They assume some mega bank is the “victim” and it didn’t really hurt anyone and it’s just a cost of doing business. Someone uses a card to buy a product and I ship it to the fraudster. Citizen sees charge, disputes it, money taken out of my account and given back to them. I still bought the item from my supplier, so i’m Out the cost of the item. No one gave me anything but a pissed off “customer” and a chargeback. But I lost $1000. Not a $1000 sale, $1000 of direct expense.

someone steals $1000 from me and no one cares to nail the guy for it except poor defenseless me. What a system. But if i’m using my truck to deliver bass I caught and fileted that someone bought from me on Craigslist I can have my truck taken away.

I am the kettle here. If you do not have credit monitoring of life lok you are walking around naked amongst revening wolves.

I recently watched a video of Frank Abagnale (Catch me if you can) where he told the true story.

One of his points about his work with the FBI was that he works cyber crime and said that credit monitoring is the best thing you can do to protect yourself.

So much could be said/discussed here. The system no longer works for us. It is not up to LEO what they investigate I am sure. Marching orders come from up the food chain.

LifeLock is a waste of money. Freeze your credit report with all 3 bureaus online, for free. No one can get credit in your name, regardless of what information they have.
Someone may still get the info from a credit card that you already have and make a fraudulent charge, but you are not responsible for it, as long as you report it.

So if they broke out in 1972 and were between 20-25 at that time it would make them about 70ish now. They would know nothing about modern crime I bet they are in Florida!

Welllll.... that's not exactly true, many departments allow officers to work cases if they would like. If they're on the road, many just can't find the time. Officers able to squeeze in a few cases here and there, are often motivated because it's something looked at if they want to move on to investigations.

In the mid 1990's, I work in the Security & Fraud department at Discover credit card in Delaware. We never investigated any fraud purchases or card security issue where the value of the loss was less than $10,000. It was just not worth it to the company. Reimburse the customer - send a new card - close the file. The end.

$10,000 !!!! And that was in the 90's.
