The US has announced it will deny diplomatic visas to same-sex partners of foreign diplomats and United Nations employees.

Oh - the backgound checks happen to whoever comes over. Gender doesn't matter for security purposes.

Somebody probably got caught doing exactly that. If anything is abusable, it will be abused.

I'm not sure why this change was made, but there is an exception for same-sex couples to be granted a visa without being married, so long as the diplomat's country does the same for our diplomats.

Yes. They need to show there are limits, even for, or especially for, those in government.
