So... I'm really not sure what to make of this. Like, why... and why now?

The US has announced it will deny diplomatic visas to same-sex partners of foreign diplomats and United Nations employees.
The change went into effect on Monday, giving partners currently in the US until 31 December to leave, get married or otherwise change their visa.

Seems like a huge security loophole that's now been closed. It's not anti same sex, it's just saying get married.
No more saying oh my name is chuck and this is my domestic partner Frank. Now chuck needs to put a ring on it.
    .
Seems like a very sure way in the past to get foreign agents into the country under the pretense of a diplomatic attache

Oh - the backgound checks happen to whoever comes over. :) Gender doesn't matter for security purposes.

Somebody probably got caught doing exactly that. If anything is abusable, it will be abused.

I'm not sure why this change was made, but there is an exception for same-sex couples to be granted a visa without being married, so long as the diplomat's country does the same for our diplomats.

Is this a big problem? Are there really that many queers in diplomatic service?

    I have no idea.

As I said in my first post, I'm really not sure what to make of it. It isn't really an offensive policy (IMHO), so I'm not sure why it would be changed.

It's difficult for me to understand how people can get so wound up in politics that they do stuff like this. He was risking much and changing nothing.

First, he thought it was okay, because his cause was "just".
Second, he didn't think he'd get caught.
Third, counting on being a liberal to get him out of consequences.
