NYT updated their story with more information basically clarifying that the story isn't remotely credible and isn't supported by anyone except the person selling the book. They also deleted some super weirdo tweets on the subject. The "paper of record" deletes and modifies stories and social media content when it embarrasses them.

Doesn't matter, though, the lie is halfway around the world already and they know it.

    This. They achieved their goal.

Waiting for Snopes to fact check the NY Times on this. But I suspect they are too busy working on another Babylon Bee item.

Oh, he can sue, but they can say what they published was opinion, and opinion is protected by the First Amendment.
As long as everything published or spoken on TV is an opinion, they can say anything they want. Notice how all the advertisements say their news is "trusted" but they never say they are reporting the truth.
(Of course, if they did say they were reporting the truth, they could claim that it was their opinion that what they said was true. You can never hold them responsible for anything they say.)

And yet, when Trump says he'd like to loosen up libel standards, he is more literally Hitler than usual

Absolutely true. I watched ABC Monday night, and I had to watch for the tiny little blurb where they stated the allegation had not been confirmed. (in other words, they broadcast a lie)

I REALLY hope Justice Kavenaugh can sure for libel.

BBBBBBbuuuuuututtttttt, Trump misspelled [STRIKE]potatoe[/STRIKE] I mean liable.

Well, the actual malice standard does let a lot of people (media) misreport and say things they have no reason to believe with "0" fear of repercussions.

No. He is just a self-centered bully that wants the law to allow him to sue people that say stuff he doesn't like.

He has nearly every single member of the MSM surrounding him and doing everything they possibly can to bring him down, every minute of every day, and he's the bully? Seriously?

ANYONE who does not bow down before the Democrat/Media Complex and declare them god-like is a bully by their definition.

Y'know, the MSM being rabid to get him and him being a self-centered bully are not mutually exclusive.
