Years ago I had neighbors with a chow that got loose several times and attacked multiple dogs and one person. I knew the couple and they were intelligent, reasonable people so I never understood their blind spot in allowing that dog to live.

People get really weird when it comes to their dogs. About 2 years ago we had a dog that was aggressive and had to be watched carefully. One evening our nephew comes over to visit my sons. He is used to just walking into the house. I'm off somewhere else in the house. Dog lunges at him and nails him in the hand. It's later in the evening and no urgent cares are open. Off to the ER, 4 stitches and 3K later in medical ER bills. The wife and I decided it was time to put him down. This dog came from the Humane Society, which I totally support. From now on we get dogs from professional rescue organizations. They seem to do a great job of vetting the dogs. Are they good with young kids, how are they with other dogs, cats in the house. We got our current dog from Giant Paw Prints out of Valpo. Could be luck but she is the best dog we have ever owned.

Ban 'em? Naw. Totally missing a registration and revenue opportunity. Tax stamp for any variation that isn't your run-of-the-puppy-mill mixed breed.

And no new fully-bite-o-mattic puppies. Only buy/sell previously registered biters, with the appropriate tax, of course.

Oh, and a special license (tax) to take them out in public.

Even though muzzles are safety devices, those are taxed/registered as well. Might take MONTHS to get your stamp.

Black 'assault' dogs should be outright banned. Even though they are EXACTLY the same as their brown (white/grey/red/blue/etc...) counterparts.

    Purple? Are you sure?

At my folks place in rural Alabama, we routinely put down stray dogs and cats, maybe a dozen a year. People just drop them off at the corner and drive away. We generally give them a day or two, but if they keep hanging around, we send them to doggie heaven. Mostly, they're mangy, starving, scared animals by the time we see them, and you can't even catch them to take to the humane society in town (30 minutes away). They never have collars on.

One time two chow puppies showed up, and they were just too beautiful to put down. The were friendly and frisky, and just awesome puppies. That time we did take them into town to the shelter. It was also before I knew anything about Chow dogs. Feral cats don't even get the customary 2 days. They'll survive and wreak havoc on all local ground nesting birds like quail and turkey.

I don't get dogs (pets, really) at all. I just don't. If they actually do a job like retrieving, herding, biting perps...fine. But just hanging around? No.

News flash for dog owners- your houses ALL smell like dog. You are noseblind.

That's why we have a cat too. The litter box masks the dog smell. And as Act implied, what's wrong with dog smell?

I saw a sign once that I'd like to get for our front door. "We have pets. If you don't want dog or cat hair on your clothes, don't sit down. That's why it's called "fur"niture." ;)

ETA: Some people "oooh" and "aaah" over the smell of a newborn baby. Blecch... I'll take dog smell over the smell of sour formula or a poopy diaper any day, thank you very much.

Alternatively, my house can smell like the collective millions of skin cells I have shed in my lifetime of living there. Ultimately I've yet to find a "good" smell for a house that involves living things being in it.

    Ferrets are nice.
And Skunks are very playful plus you can train them to use a litter box.

These critters are able to kill any odor your house may have...... or car..... or neighborhood.

    Finally someone agrees with me!
All these huskies in my neighborhood, but not one darn sled...
    GSD, but no livestock...
    Terriers and no rats...
Bulldogs and bull baiting is illegal...

I have cats, but that for theological reasons. Cats treat their owners like worthless scum, and as a Calvinist, that reminds me that my sinful self is viewed the same way by God until the blood of Christ covers me.

Our house does NOT smell like dog at all. It smells like SKUNK. Personally, I’m hoping the dog smell comes back pretty soon. Ran in the house and drug herself down the side of the couch before my wife could get her back outside.
