    Decimated, yeah. Like "no paycheck"

We currently have four doctors and three PAs in the ER. We have 9 patients. That is not a viable business model.

Over on Jim Lucas’ FB page, in the comments under one of his posts, a commenter was going on about how hospitals are currently overwhelmed. In full disclosure, I used your comments here to throw a bit of cold water on his assertions.

Other than the “National Health Commission of the Peoples Republic of China” calling it “magically safe” it sounds very promising.

ER doc's get paid by headcount?

It can be apples and oranges though. ICUs may be overwhelmed. Local ERs certainly are not. Our ICU has a few sick people with suspected COVID but not everyone.

People are actually using the ER for emergencies now which may lead to a huge shift in what I see and how many people we employ

This sounds crass, but it is not intended as such. So we lose 6% of the population, consisting mainly those of retirement age and the infirmed; all of those who are more likely to be a burden on the economy anyway. Will that really be a large loss? On a cultural scale, absolutely. We need the wisdom of those folks to help us be more human. But those dying are not those that will be here in 20 years anyway. I know it sounds cold, but those are the facts. Now if this was a bug that was killing primarily babies and children and we're looking at a legitimate threat to the viability of our species, than that would be a different story and I'd be behind this to keep all of our kids alive. But the kids are the ones that so far are faring well so I think this is doing more harm than good.

Doctors who are exposed to contagious patients all day can lose much more than money.

Health care professionals are not paid enough, some work 24hrs shifts away from their families, they take huge risks especially now.

They don't do it for the money as most doctors can afford to stay safe at home with their loved ones.Yet they don't.

They decide to come in contact with dozens of highly contagious patients everyday just to serve the community.

They need all of our support right now more than ever.

If you know doctors and nurses, instead of talking about their salary, ask they if they need any help ...

Do they need groceries since they work all day and don't have time to go to the store?
Help babbystiting kids since schools are closed?
Do they have enough masks to protect themselves? Maybe you have a few N95 masks in your garage that you don't use.

In France everyday at 8 pm people gather on their balcony to give a round of applaud to show their support to healthcare workers.

He’s complaining about not having enough work and the ER department going broke.

So you will only lose 10% of your salary, while others are losing MUCH more
His wife is also off work so they are losing a lot too.
I really hope we dont make it a competition of who's losing more or we judge others for being successful.
Some on ingo may not lose any job or time off work. GREAT!!
We need to rally around each other not nit pick. I like transparency. Doc was giving us an inside look at a profession that many of us do not get to see inside. He was asked. He shared. I'm grateful for that and also the sacrifices he and others make on the front lines.
They are literally the modern day canaries if you will. Many have passed away because of covid19 because they were caring for patients. They are heros period.

If its determined that China did engineer this virus and unleashed it willingly or by accident, they need to pay much more than money.
I think our government already knows the answer to this. They will keep it a secret for now until we stabilize and also get independence from Chinese meds and other things I suspect. But I truly believe this will cause a complete shift in the whole of how we deal with China. Trade but also diplomatic.
I see open aggression increasing on both sides in the near future.
China has always been very aggressive but I believe it will increase and we will not be so nice about their moves.

My wife took my son the the er last night. He decided to see if a lego would fit in his ear. Well it did. Perfectly I might add. She said the er was a ghost town. Completely empty other than them. On the other hand my mom is on her way to a different hospital as I type this. Suspected covid-19. All of a sudden got sick a few days ago. Body aches, fever, cough and now can’t breathe. When she went to the doctor the other day she was tested for nothing. They said she had the flu (without testing for it) and sent her home.

This may sound crass. But, **** old people. Yeah, they’re all expendable. No good to society at all. Hell. They don’t contribute anything. Just a burden. Let ‘em die I say. 6 million boomers taking dirt naps? Meh.

    Are you people ****ing serious?

On a strictly economic level a massive, a relatively sudden die off of the largest and oldest generation is a huge boon. Does that mean I wish for it, no. Does that mean I can't see the obvious (if undesired) benefit of millions of non-working population dying swiftly and passing their wealth on to the younger, smaller, still working one? Also no.

    This quote lack internal consistency.

The common cold doesn't kill people. Natural mutations of it are more dangerous, and do kill people (or contribute to killing them like COVID-19).

It is at least as plausible that this is a natural mutation that is particularly damaging to humans, and further generations will mutate out of that dangerous effect. Just like the common cold.

Have you never paid for an ER visit? Last year I had to take my son to the ER when he had complications from the flu. It wasn’t just one bill. Every department and every doctor that had anything to do with his care, sent us a bill. I’m surprised that the janitor didn’t send us a bill. If there are no patients, there isn’t anyone to bill.

Not as I grown up I haven't. Last time I was in an ER was 23 years ago. You better not have just jinxed me! :(

I do get an insane number of bills from medical providers, but I never equated them with the paychecks of the people on the other end before. I figured it was just a byproduct of our insanely bloated and inefficient healthcare system. I mean... Thousands of people do stuff so I can use the internet, but I just get one bill.
