Looks like someone may have taken shots at a Trump rally in Los Angeles: https://ktla.com/news/local-news/so...dland-hills-after-reports-of-person-with-gun/

    Hello OakRiver,

I was reflecting on the current situation of marches/counter-marches and now martyrs and counter-martyrs. At least at an intellectual level, it reminds me of my studies a long time ago on The Troubles, at least superficially (without the religious context, maybe). While the contemporary escapades are new to a couple generations of Americans, it is not a new phenomenon, really. It occurred to me that you have a perhaps unique perspective on that kind of dynamic.

Of course, I apologize if you've addressed this and I missed it, or you'd prefer not to elaborate.

    Thanks,
    T

There are a lot of similarities with the Troubles, but also, for now at least, a lot of things that are different (such as the lack of any one side clearly collaborating with security forces to carry out dirty work). Just like The Troubles: know what area(s) you're going into, don't wear anything that might allow others to determine whether you are on "their side" or not at a glance, avoid talking politics and religion with people you don't trust.

Once a society has become 'us' and 'them' it is very easy for each side to do terrible things to the other.

I don't disagree but -- Do you two think it's as bad now as it was in the wake of the King and two Kennedy assassinations? Genuine question.

I'm not old enough to remember that time.

Based on conversations and study, I think many find it comparable.

    "us" and "them"... yes, definitely

While conservatives sometimes call liberals names like "libtard" I think any dehumanizing of the left is only done by a few who are truly racist

It's becoming more common for liberals to dehumanize Trump supporters. "They don't deserve consideration" is an attitude I have seen. I've had people I am acquainted with IRL unfriend me on facebook because I won't agree that all Trump supporters are fascists and/or racist.

Yeah that's kinda my take as well -- I was on the "we've dealt with worse civil strife in the modern era" band until the post-Floyd after math. Now I think we're there. It's like the 92 riots but in multiple cities and more just 'cause.

    I am.

It appears there is a lot less singing nowadays. Maybe because all those white marxists don't have rhythm.

Or....it could be that HipHop just doesn't work with a crowd.

Thanks. The Rep U Constabulary prevents me from repping you.

I fear we are there already.

I vehemently disagree. The ANTIFA/BLM side may be there, but I only see the people that would defend against them as defenders, not actively looking for a fight or to hurt anyone.

As a nominal lefty, I'll agree with that. I just don't see the street level aggression from the right, at all.

We are definitely trending in that direction. We aren't there yet. But so long as people have a reason to listen to voices that seek to divide us, and steer us away from all the good things we have in common, the longer it will take to right our ship's course.

This might get you unfriended quicker, but have you asked them if they've considered, what if they're full of ****?

I have struggled with these passages over the past few days, but I keep coming back to them.

    Love for Enemies
27 “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. 30 Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. 31 Do to others as you would like them to do to you.

32 “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! 33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! 34 And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return.

35 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. 36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.

    Luke 6:27-36

39 But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. 40 If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. 41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile,[a] carry it two miles. 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow.

    Teaching about Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies![c] Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends,[d] how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

    Matthew 5:39-44

Great scriptures. If you were harming someone would you want someone to stop you? Would you want someone to tell you? "Do to others as you would like them to do to you.

And He said unto them, "If thou hast a cloak, sell it and buy a sword, so that when thine enemies arrive, ye may give it unto them so that they may take it and stick it up thine a**."

Makes about as much sense as the rest of that jibberish.

OK peoples. If we lean towards scripture that's fine. If you do not like the writings then just do not reply. We have set that decorum a ways back so lets stick to it.

And I will say we have specific threads to discuss/share these beliefs.

    We will not slam.

Be nice or just do not post.

I'm not trying to be smart a$$ but read the chapters around that verse to get the flavor of what is going on.. something ive learned and I will see this alot from liberals ( and I used to do it) but verses by themselves don't hold much meaning, you have to dig for the context of that verse..dont get me wrong, there are verses that are cut and dry but maybe if look at context, It will help.. example is turn the other cheek, that doesn't apply to some trying to kill you or your family, its intended for when people are slandering you or even throwing rotten eggs etc. Another BIG misconception is DONT BEAR FALSE WITNESS.. well it doesn't mean dont lie although other places it is let known to us that got does not like lying lips but what it really refers to is to witness or testifie against someone falsely.. especially when that person is in a position of being judged by false witness..

But in short, context is everything, the Bible is used to interpret the Bible, not man's flawed heart. Our writers of the constitution modeled it much in the same way, if your looking for a meaning of something not obvious, you look at the constitution to interpret its meaning
