It's just TC talking about the production, actually flying the birds, G's, etc. but his enthusiasm about the whole thing appeared genuine.

I'm guessing that the millions he has/will earn on this role played into it but still, I'm going to cut him a little slack.:)

Not in the intro but there is one scene where he is launching from a carrier and that WAS him launching from a carrier and not in a two seater either.
That's cool. I felt like just watching him act in the movie you could tell he was in his own Disneyland and loving it.

Unfortunately, he never piloted the jet as PIC, let alone in a 2 seater. according to the Pentagon. Their rules prohibit it. He never got checked out in the Hornet, either. He only got the basic prep that anyone going for a ride gets, including basic instruction on ejection, g-forces, and basic water survival. (I actually did the same stuff minus the water, with the Blue Angels. I didn't get the ride because I was too tall, but my boss did, and he asked them to let me go through the instruction, which they did. It was awesome.) So it had to be the 2 seater. But I never saw anything in the shots of him flying throughout the movie that gave away the fact he was in a 2 seater. But if any Hollywood hotshot could fly an F-18, TC would be the one. Travolta would be another. Harrison Ford, maybe, but he'd land it on the wrong runway (or carrier! LOL!)

They really nailed the details in this one with the exception of a few. I won't get into those until more of our INGO brothers and sisters see the movie. Don't want to spoil anything. But overall, the realism was one of the best I've seen out of Hollywood, ever. Just the fact they flew against 100% believeable enemy aircraft, including the surprise one, took it to the top. I'd say it was right up there with The Battle of Britain, which used real ME109's, with the exception of being powered by Rolls Royce Merlins.

One of the videos out there about the production represent that he was flying solo in many of the shots. I wasn't there.
Maybe, but the Pentagon has said he did not and that no civilian has ever been allowed to do it, as per the rules. There's just no way. As good and experience a pilot he is, these are not easy jets to fly. It would take months, at a minimum, of training to do it. They especially would not do that at his age.

I've seen the claims but not a credible one yet. And I've not seen TC make the claim. But I'm not sure the F-18F even has dual controls. I don't believe it does. The F-14 did not. So the only way a civy even does that is in a trainer.

The closest anyone would get outside of owning a private ex-military jet would be to be a pilot working for a defense contractor. But that would be an ex-military pilot.

On another note, Tom Cruise did create a training program for the other actors that went way beyond the military's standard civillian prep (which is really cool, in and of itself, but only a few hours long.) His program was reportedly much more intense. No surprise there, as he's an incredibliy competent and experienced pilot.

I wouldn't be shocked if the movie studio made the claim TC actually piloted aircraft in the movie. It'd be true only because he flew the P-51 in it. That was 100% TC, for sure.

The wife and I want to see it, quick question for those who have. How is it for kids? I have a 14 year old daughter I am thinking of taking, any issues?

Pretty clean overall, a couple $h!ts and only one F-bomb. Context-wise, no cringy sex scene and everything else was above board.

The family and I watched the original today before went to see Maverick at the IMAX tonight. For a child of the 80s, it was a phenomenal movie, and I was not displeased at all. It had every opportunity to be wokey or push narrative but it avoided it a nearly every level. I loved hearing the music and the intro was a great throwback. I feel that it was all completely well done and followed the original quite well, and probably might have been a touch better.

In all honesty, it was the movie we needed in 2020 but we weren’t allowed to have.

Took the family to see it this afternoon. The wife and I loved it. I heard Steve Stevens guitar playing during the Top Gun anthem and it just gave me chills. Terrific from start to finish. Tom I think will go down as one of the greats. Now bring on the next Mission Impossible.

    WoW!!!

What a great movie. Will go back to watch it on IMAX after the crowds die down. Go see this on the big screen, don’t wait for DVD or streaming.

I would rank better than the first Top Gun. But like Godfather II it was only good because number one was so well done. When Tom Cruise dies the Top Gun movies will be featured in his TV eulogy coverage.

    That
    was
    fantastic!

Loved it & well worth the extra $ to see it at an iMax theater. GF loved it as well (TC shirtless left quite an impression on her. I guess I'll need to start working out again.).
