Georgian troops today launched a major military offensive to regain control over the breakaway region of South Ossetia, as Russia warns further aggression would lead to retaliation from Moscow.

Heavy battles were today raging around the capital, Tskhinvali, and buildings were ablaze as Georgia launched an air and tank attack on the separatist stronghold. Georgia claimed that Russia, which supports the separatists, sent fighter jets into Georgian airspace and dropped bombs.

Georgian units had almost surrounded Tskhinvali and had taken five rebel villages nearby. A series of huge explosions and rocket fire in and around Tskhinvali were heard this morning, and at least 15 people are reported dead

Georgia's minister for integration, Temur Yakobashvili, said Georgia's aim was not to take over the territory but to finish "a criminal regime".

Someone needs to tell that soldier to take his finger off the trigger.

Just saw this on Fox News. They said there were unconfirmed reports of hundreds of dead civilians. We have issued statements that Russia must respect the sovereignty of Georgia.

As to the Georgian army. They have tons of military supplies left after the Soviet Union dissolved. Yes it's old, but between that and new weapons, they could definitely put up a fight.

Afganistan held their own against the Soviet Union. Georgia can probably do better.

    Georgia? Never heard of it.

That is truly sad, (if your not pulling our leg).
I think if you watch/read/care about the world news, you are going to learn a lot about the former Soviet Republic of Georgia in the next few days. Last report I read there are 2000 civilians dead, and we have American troops there training Georgian troops about to deploy to Iraq.

You see they are actually one of our new allies.
    This could get sticky!

I heard on the news that Georgia is pulling her troops out of Iraq to bring "home" to fight there.

It's a country about the size of the US State of Georgia on the southern end of Russia that held most of Russia's warm water ports, has one of the worlds most strategic oil pipelines, the Country is two thousand of years old......

Current events aside, I believe the "sad" comment is in reference to lack of knowledge of world history/ world civ. It's typical of most Americans and sad in that regard.

    Exactly!

I honestly didn't mean it as a personal slam, more as a general sigh of frustration, in the overall lack of awareness of most Americans.

Would it have helped had I mentioned it is right next door to Borat's home country of Kazakhstan?

    I thought that might help.

Russia's been defeated in the recent past by Chechan rebels using
    Iranian support.
The Russian military seemed to have logistics and money problems.
    It could be different now.

Your right I forgot about that 200 mile ferry ride across the Caspian Sea between Aqtau, Kazakhstan and Makhachkala, Dagestan then that awful 110 mile drive to T'elavi, Georgia

    How could I forget that?

Ain't the internet wonderful, you can find anything!

I believe that the schools are so worried about the kids passing the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, that they skimp on the "more important" issues/education - among other reasons. :xmad:
