Not to mention if you dont tip excessively, you may never get your food. Drivers see the tips as they scan to see what orders to claim. If they see no/low tip they skip it.

Or if they do take the run, they only do so if there are other orders around you. So for instance they'll claim your order, plus two other orders near you. If your restaurant is close to them, they'll stop there first, then get the other two orders, drop those off first, and yours last. So yours may end up on their car seat for an hour before you finally get your cold, nasty food.

Is it safe to assume that all the folks railing against these delivery services never order pizza for delivery?
Apples and oranges. Independent contractors with little to no oversight are not the same as employees working for the pizzaria.

I dont do delivery unless its very rare. (once in the last 10 years) And if I learned that my pizza place fired its drivers and outsourced to those companies I'd always go get it myself.

Plus, if you get delivery you dont find out until its too late they effed up your order. I always check my order before I leave. If they screwed it up, Its fixed in 5 minutes. (10 for pizza)

I buy great quality pizza on special, take it home and put it on the pizza stone, it is better than at the shop, even days later. Cheap smoke and mirrors pizza does not reheat well, the cheese only melts once.

I need to get back to Papa Murphy’s again…

Well, I ordered Papa John's delivery last night. Guess who delivered it? Doordash, not Papa John's.

It's more difficult to get a large pizza in the crapper with you. :D

And I don't, or ever have, use(d) any delivery service.

Noble Romans opened a take and back place near me, but they were only open for a couple of years. That was even better than Papa Murphy's. Sadly, it's now a Gordon's Fish and Chicken. The neighborhood has gone downhill there.

Big chains all are outsourcing this…
They've had to. Domino's was advertising for delivery drivers all during covid and couldn't pay enough to hire any. Half the time when I'd call in a delivery order, they'd call be back to tell me I'd have to pick it up because they didn't have any delivery drivers working.

Yep, most cannot even get the workers they need to make pizza, much less to deliver them. Fast food managers spending time hauling workers that don’t have transportation just to get help.

I think back then Domino's went as high as offering 20 bucks an hour (+tips), plus a 1000 dollar signing bonus. That's a lot for a pizza delivery job.

BK as a company is stepping up. Better service, better fries, better sandwiches than they had become known for. Didn’t eat there at all for years. McD’s is falling, food tastes terrible, plastic, fake, and this from a guy that once loved a Big Mac, Filet O Fish, fries and Coke as lunch for years…
Great, now I want Burger King too.

I have heard they have been taking a hard look at locations and the physical buildings and shutting down those that are bad, as part of a greater growth strategy…
BK actually bought out one of its largest franchisees and plans to remodel the stores and then I believe they are to re-franchise these back out. It's an attempt to get many more locations to their new standards faster than they could with that franchisee in place.

I haven't for many years, and if the additional cost had been what the 3rd party vendors charged I wouldn't have then. Now that I have a smoker and a cast iron, there's no chain pizza that interests me anyway.

The last delivery I had was Chinese food, delivered by the restaurant, probably 5+ years ago. If I had to get food delivered again, it would probably be Chinese food delivered by the same restaurant. My wife learned to make orange chicken, though, and we keep some frozen pre-made asian food (Korean & Chinese mostly) from Costco in the chest freezer.

We've had really bad luck with both BK and Hardee's while traveling as far as consistency of service and food.

I know it's not an option here, but the burger place that's been 100% consistent for us over several years and multiple states has been Whataburger.

One thing I have observed recently is that several places, such as breweries, and independent casual restaurants offer a pretty good burger and fries for $13-$15 bucks. McD’s near is that for a BigMac value meal…
