Just like a bad lawyer…Do we actually have representation?
No matter who we vote for the taxes will never be abolished. Thats the issue. Is it a permanent improvement? It is all spelled out in the codes. So if we didn’t tax a 4’ fire pit, at what point do we start? Next thing you know some wealthy owner has a three bedroom, three bath, carriage house he calls a “fire pit”. The fairest way is to tax them all.
In Indiana the counties exchange data with the area real estate boards.
So they could charge you more.
Sounds like Porter county voters need to elect a better assessor.
There are no utopian areas anywhere, some counties are competent others are not.
And before I am accused of being a tax lover, there are conversations to be had on our collective dislike of property taxes and a desire to eliminate them and there also is the practical of dealing with our current situation, tax laws, and their implementation. The best way to solve this is to get involved in electing better assessors…
I don't buy the false housing shortage the banks and realtors push. Look up black rock they are buying mass amounts of private homes. And black rock ties to many many other companies owned by the Rockefeller family. There is thousands of homes sitting empty here, alot brand new and sat for years also, especially with rates and prices in the clouds.Want to see why your assessed values are rising sharply it can be summed up in a couple of charts.

Note the housing supply deficit. That is the demand vs. supply, now let’s look at the results.

Pretty simple really. If one looks at the blue bars in the top chart the area still has not reached the building peak of 2005. My rough count is that since the peak of 2005 there are about 125,000 missing houses in the area. Newer neighborhoods typically turn over at 10% a year meaning there are 12,500 houses a year not available for sale because they were never built…
All these damn liberals cry housing is a human right, and want FREE housing. Along with college, a universal income, healthcare, and oh dont forget support the illegals crossing the open border. But yet us privileged home owners will loose our house if we don't pay taxes. While, ideally, it would also involve spending cuts — especially in unnecessary boondoggles such as the one with which this thread started — I realize that's about as likely as me flying to the moon because I had chili for dinner.
The answer is not easy to make happen, but it is rather simple.
Shift it to other taxes. Everything you mentioned (schools, police & fire protection, county offices, etc.) is of similar benefit to every property and person living in or business domiciled in a political subdivision.
None of it has to be funded by a means that can result in homelessness. That's just the way it has always been.
At one point, having a king was the way it had always been; that didn't make it any more right.
The only fair amount for property taxes is $0.
No one wants to say who other than property owners should pay for services that directly benefit the property and how they should be collected. No matter who we vote for the taxes will never be abolished. Thats the issue.
All this can be paid for by sales taxes, tobacco taxes, sugar taxes, registration fees for roads also the tolls roads (not rented out to another country). The casinos and lottery should pay a hefty tax. FUEL TAXES are supposed to help pay for roads also. There is a gazillion other taxes that can pay for infrastructure. I think you just turned off the ears when people put out there ways to cover schools and services. Most services have bills also like trash, water, electricity, and some fire depts. No one wants to say who other than property owners should pay for services that directly benefit the property and how they should be collected.
Well it is real. Do you think that housing for all bidens illegals is just sitting empty? For the illegals from the past fifteen years? Then does blackrock have empty homes? They are being used for folks to live in they just cannot be bought. Where the hell are all these empty houses? There sure are not any I know of other than normal homes in transition…I don't buy the false housing shortage the banks and realtors push. Many of the taxes we pay are more then enough but the gov misappropriates the funds.
Fuel taxes do go to roads but do not cover local street and road departments as I understand it.. FUEL TAXES are supposed to help pay for roads also.
Duh, we could do that by not funding Ukraine.I believe that .gov could be reduced by over 50% in 1 day & the vast majority of peoples life would not be any different in less than 1 month, except keeping more of what they earn.
And that 75% of spending could drop with same results as above.
It is a system that rewards waste & penalizes conservatism.
Duh, we could do that by not funding Ukraine.
The problem with these discussions is your point is great related to feds and even state .gov, but most municipalities are not flush with cash and things like the jails posted here recently are often funded from feds and state.
I believe property owners should be able to own property without payments that could cause them to lose their property. The delima is I also believe property owners should pay for what benefits their property. I suspect many would believe similarly.I will defer to the image in post #1 & the report of cost in post #48.
(my opinion, this is HUGE waste & overspending)
Admittedly I do not know the source of the funds for all this comes from, although I believe it is unlikely being paid for by the fed (us).
The position you seem to take indicates that you believe that the existence of property taxes are just and right, is this correct? Legit question.
Oh yeah good point on the illegals but who is to pay for thier housing and needs? Tax payers.Well it is real. Do you think that housing for all bidens illegals is just sitting empty? For the illegals from the past fifteen years? Then does blackrock have empty homes? They are being used for folks to live in they just cannot be bought. Where the hell are all these empty houses? The reality we all know is robbery by greed. If only they would cut wasted spending on all levels!I believe property owners should be able to own property without payments that could cause them to lose their property. The delima is I also believe property owners should pay for what benefits their property. I suspect many would believe similarly.
I also believe everyone that lives in any kind of home or apartment pays property tax either directly or indirectly through their rent. Most of those that I discuss this with have no idea what property taxes pay for other than maybe schools.
I believe that schools should be shifted to another tax but the rub there is I want it to be strictly local tax so local people can control their schools, not the state and after the DOE is shut down.
I am also strongly opposed to fed taxes being sent back to states and local government at all and hate the strings they include. Sadly though our state and local governments are addicted to these funds and in my experience much of what they build is from the big guys. I have listened to town councils delay for years projects until they can get OPM to fund much of it.
I also am a pragmatist to the reality we live in and misinformation and whining gets us nowhere…
Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. Either it's wrong for everyone to rent from the state forever or you're OK with a mechanism that allows government to confiscate your property if you cannot afford to pay the toll. It's theft at the point of a gun. Whether you're Jim Irsay or Joe Blow. Whether you're a legacy owner or the new guy. To let them take money from you every year on zero realized gain is wrong and should provoke every single one of us.You should at least be exempt from property taxes on your primary residence once you reach retirement age. And at least up to a certain amount. I mean, somebody like Jim Irsay in his $8m estate shouldnt be exempt, But Some elderly couple in a $200k or less house shouldnt pay. Provided they've paid at least X years of property taxes. Some old person that decides to move here and buy a house to retire in shouldnt necessarily be exempt. It should be something that folks that have paid for years get to "age out" and stop after a while.
