A full night vision setup is cost prohibitive for me at the moment, so I've been looking at a thermal clip on for my rifle in the interim such as the ones you all listed above. Is that a good solution in the short-term or should I save my pennies and get a PVS-31 setup?

While I currently use a .308, my favorite round would have to be the .243. Light enough for varmit and great for deer with the right bullet. And great for the newer shooter as well.
I haven't bought a rifle in 6.5CM because I have enough .308 stowed away. It seems to do the same job on deer as I've heard from other shooters using 6.5. With my distances of 300 yards or closer, I don't think there is enough difference to get me to hop onboard. That and 6.5 seems to be $5-10...
