    You don't have to be defenseless just because you are unarmed.

    Same way some folks are "armed and defenseless" ... like that cop who froze and did nothing to intervene in a school shooting recently.

    Having the mindset and skills to defend yourself and others, regardless of what type of weapon you carry (or don't carry) is the most important.

    But having a force multiplier / distance tool like a firearm sure helps if one has the mindset and skill to use it effectively.

    Yep. Some training Ive had even incorporates the idea of ppsainly having to take a firearm from a coward like you mention and using their gun to stop the threat. Do whatever you have to do to preserve innocent life. Normal "rules" no longer apply when people are shooting at you and others. Time to be an animal and kill/stop that mofo.
