    Here's a post made on FB by a co-worker.

    [/B]

    ...and so it begins.

Your co-worker is a moron. If 1 MILLION people marched on DC, all armed even with just pistols, DC would be overwhelmed.

We the people can throw of the yoke of tyranny, even today, as long as we are armed.

I would offer your co-worker a 1 way ticket to Moscow. They should like it there.

The survivors are saying that he walked in, shot into the ceiling, and then throw a "gas cannister". They were able to touch him.

No one knocked him down. No one even tripped him. He roamed and slaughtered at will. Very, very sad.

It would have just taken one person with a handgun....and he most likely would have been stopped. Armor or not. If they were close enough to touch him, a round in the groin would have worked.

Just putting rounds in his general vicinity could possibly stall him or stun him of you hit him. 45acp doesn't feel good even through body armor.
Putting rounds down in the general vicinity is a military concept where the general vicinity is occupied by enemy forces. It doesn't work where non combatants are present

When you have an armed, armored attacker firing continuously at you, you ARE in a military situation. Hopefully the sheep would be scrambling AWAY from him since they obviously weren't trying to stop him on their own.

The story about him being a member of Occupy Wall Street seems to be sweeping across the internet. A lot of people on ABC news are giving them a lot of grief. Apparently Brian Ross was trying to tie the shooter to a 50 something Tea Party member earlier.

Yeah. Imagine (if you need to) the impact of a .45ACP to the center of a trauma plate. Now, translate that same impact to the back/side of your head. At close quarters like this, a double tap to the riot helmet could easily disorient the gunman long enough to subdue him.

My question about bulletproof helmets, though, is wouldn't they tend to deflect a bullet, if deflect it did, down into the top of the torso if hit below the curve?

They don't deflect bullets, they tend to deform them and spread their energy out. That is how kevlar works differently than a hard armor like ceramic or steel.

Google the image of a modern level IIIa helmet and I don't think you will see any angles downward for this specific reason.

This guy had ZERO military training. If someone had started firing at him, most likely he would have frozen, wet himself, and took off.

He didn't want to die, or he would have committed suicide by cop. His goal was to SHOCK everyone.

Given that the Batman movie was about the OWS types holding the 1% hostage, this might be more accurate that he was part of that movement.

If it can be shown that he is a libertarian-socialists (anarchist or OWS) type then the MSN will bury this so fast that it would be make your head spin.

Everything we say about what should have happened is by its very nature, subjective fiction, but here's the way I look at it.

It takes a particular mindset to commit a crime such as this; not everyone would think of it or plan to get it done.

It also takes a particular mindset to arm and train oneself to protect self and others. No matter what the first mindset might bring into a situation, enough people with the self-defense mindset could have brought about a different outcome. In fact, if enough people had possessed the proper mindset, when this guy started shooting, everyone else would have hit the floor and multiple shooters would have engaged the point where the gunshot flashes were emanating, smoke, tear gas or whatever else in the situation notwithstanding. Understand me, this is a fictional scenario to make a point: It's not the weapons available, it's the mindset, training, and will to use whatever is available that provides us with the tools to minimize the effects of such violent assaults and end them quickly.

I imagine most of the people were either on the floor cowering or crawling to get away. The gunman was likely standing and the only one doing so. Shooting in his direction likely wouldn't hurt any more innocent people than he was doing.

This is why I feel more people should carry firearms. More people should exercise their rights and carry a weapon not only for their protection, but for the protection of others. I feel sad for the families of the effected, but out of over 60 people, if just one person was carrying a firearm, this man may have been stopped before any real damage could have been done..
