Yeah that is a really smart woman, ooh a random gun shaped object, it sure could not be a gun, excuse me while I pull the trigger. Almost wish she would have been trying to light her own cig. Some people in this world really worry me.

"[Sgt.] Diaz advised residents not to handle objects resembling a firearm or suspicious devices, and instead call police for help."

Yep. Never try to be self sufficient or competent. Just call big brother for help. Big rock in your yard? Call for help so you don't hurt someone with it.

Just one more reason that mandatory gun handling and safety should be part of every schools curriculum.

I once had a butane torch lighter that looked like a small pistol so I can where its possible to mistake but it should still be pretty obvious.

I believe the point they were trying to make is that all gun owners are
ignorant trailer park hicks and need to be policed.

That said, it would seem that natural selection is still alive and at work....thank God.

I think it's plausible they lady thought it was a novelty lighter. I had one of the NAA .22's and half the people I ever showed it too asked if it was real.

This was my thought as well. I would also point out that it bounced off the ground and hit her daughter. So at least she was point it at the ground when she pulled the trigger.
However, this is a single action revolver. You have to cock the hammer before pulling the trigger. You should notice the cylinder revolving in the frame. And you still thought it was a lighter?!
As others have stated alcohol, and or, not wanting to admit it was your gun and stupidity.
