Ok I completed my conversion of a rock island armory 1911 .45 to a 40 super. The biggest cost was the barrel it was about $215 for a 5.72 in ported barrel drop in fit that included a barrel busching and link. I also bought a 24 .lbs recoil spring a titanium firing pin and heavy duty spring. The barrel I ordered from storm lake went right in the gun and with the recoil spring the gun was ready to fire I replaced the firing pin and spring to be safe. The first day at the range the pistol fired great no problems as far as a conversion it was very easy and with the 24 lbs. recoil spring it was a joy to fire and recoil was comparable to a standard .45 acp.

40 super is a necked down 45 acp to a 40 cal. and slightly longer it is suposed to mimic the 44 mag but so far in my tests it just passes the .41 mag but not a .44 mag

That sounds interesting, its sort of like the 357 Sig only built on a different case and throwing a 40 caliber bullet.

I'm guessing its strictly a hand loaded round.

What bullet weight are you throwing and what velocities do you expect?

double tap makes it in 200 grain flat tip or 135 grain nosler hollow point for about $55 for a box of 50 and a company in california makes it but I cant remeber the name redding makes the only dies I know of a reload data is scarce at best but if anyone is intrested I have got reload data from Tony Rumore who worked on the prototype round in '98

Tried to post the pic but could not. I got the storm lake barrel and it fit perfectly the 24 lbs. recoil spring was a bit of a pain but the pistol fired every time no problems although the double tap ammo was a little slow according to my chrony. Over all I'm very pleased with the conversion and how easy it was.

Why go for the 40 super over the 460 rowland?

Much easier to reload for the 460, fairly cheap to convert to. I have one and it hasn't been very fussy about anything.

Only thing I really dislike is being required to have a compensator... If there was a way to get that power out of the 1911 platform without a compensator, I'd be in heaven. And I mean by modifying the gun, not buying a wilson combat hunter.

Really wish the 38 casull hadn't died off, that'd be my first choice for a souped up 1911. I know you can jump through hoops and shoot a dead caliber, but it's too much of a pain for a mere mortal like myself.

Actually it is a 45 Winchester magnum necked down to a 40. A 45acp necked down to 40 is a 400 Corbon, yes almost identical ballistics to a 240 grain 44 mag
