Im fairly new to pistols, especially carrying one. Now I've shot plenty but never owned my own to know it inside out.

STI is where you need to look for a double stack 1911. They are a 1911 in EVERY way except for the magazine and parts related to accommodate said magazine. They run like scalded dogs too. I build many custom double wide 1911s using their frames and slides, but you can get a factory STI gun too.

Thanks for the great link. But I am planning on carrying my first pistol once I get the permit in the mail. So I don't think a full size 1911 will be comfortable down the road. On the other hand guns I haven't had the chance to feel the weight orange full sized 1911 being carried. Maybe ill go the popular route and buy a cz75b (how is the weight compared to a 1911?) Or xd

You're kind of all over the place. If you want all metal, than an XD is out, and frankly if you're concerned about weight an all metal double stack isn't the right place to be looking. A metal gun like the CZ75B is going to be over a pound heavier than a similar sized polymer gun like the Glock 17.

I carried a full sized 1911 for years, both IWB and OWB, and would still do so if my department allowed them. Now I carry a Sig P220 and its comfortable. The right holster and right belt will make even a heavier, bulkier gun comfortable to carry. Likewise a cheap holster on a crappy belt will make even a lightweight slim gun less pleasant to carry.

Im guessing I need to go shoot some first. But of course I don't think there are any lgs. Here that allow renting a gun.

I am going to agree with tomfoolery and sing the praises of the Rock Island. I have owned and shot a lot of 1911's in my day, and I would have to admidt, I was impressed with my CS-Tactical, right out of the box. It's nice, compact, and easy to conceal. Solid shooter...

Prime example of the immature people that don't need a gun. Anyways, alot of pistols to thinkabout. Being my first handgun I would like a rail for HD when im not carrying and need a light attached

I would like to shoot the sig nightmare carry, colt ltw commander and rock island.

I don't have the Sig Nightmare Carry, but I've got the XO.
My Colt is a government model, but I do have the midsize (MS) Rock Island...although I do have slim grips on it (I put those on all of them).
Depending on schedules, location, and weather...you're welcome to try them if you want to set something up.

I don't know if this matters but my friend has the XD's. Both 45 but his carry is a compact and it felt to small in my hands. Im not a big person, 5'10 155. Medium fingers but meaty hands. His show baby(1911) felt right at home in my hand. But like a previous poster said, its all about the right holster and belt.

That XD45 (being a double stack AND 45) is gonna feel WAY chunkier than any 1911...even with standard thickness grips on it. Which 1911 did he have that you thought felt right?

Springfield. I've held my grandpas kimbers, colts and springfields. They all felt great but alleging about the 1911 platform got me. For willing to spend 1000, maybe more, I should have a wide selection to pick from. I liked the 4.25 barrel, I believe that's what t was and im wanting that. So sig, colt, s&w and Springfield come to mind first.

I second the CZ 75 SP01 recommendation. For .45s, I am a fan of 1911s, but for 9mm it's hard to beat a CZ 75. I think they come as close to perfect as you can get in a 9mm double stack all metal gun.
