New gun arrived today. Detonics CombatMaster built and sold by the Illinois Detonics Defense corporation but using a frame that was actually made by the former Detonics company in Georgia. These are the smallest of the reliable 1911 pistols made, 6 + 1 shots of 45acp.

I like that the new one has the sights pushed back, never could stand the look of the older one. Never did quite grasp the logic behind it either

Back in the 70's when the CombatMaster was developed there was no such thing as a true concealed carry gun. The only 1911's were big guns. The CombatMaster was the first reliable small 1911 and as such it was designed with features that were deemed desirable in the 1970's.

The sight radius was shortened to make room for the scalloped cut on the rear of the slide. The short sight radius was not considered a problem because the gun was considered to be a SHORT RANGE gun for last ditch self defense. The scalloped cut out of the slide was to allow a user to more easily thumb back the hammer. The hammer of an original gun actually protruded up ABOVE the top of the slide by a small amount, if you are in trouble, you can literally cock your hammer back against your clothes, a wall, or with just about any part of your body. That was the logic. But those were the days when carrying with a round in the chamber and the hammer down was considered safe. Some early CombatMasters had serrations on the SIDE of the hammer to make it easier to lower the hammer without it slipping. When the owner of the company shot off a round inside the office one day it was generally no longer considered safe carry :):

Obviously today there are very few 1911 shooters who consider either half-cock or hammer down/live round to be even remotely safe.

Just to clarify, you are talking about a small framed 1911 and not handguns in general, correct? There were any number of concealable handguns around in the '70s.

Yes, we are in a 1911 thread, the comment was specifically about 1911 style guns. The context of the reply specifically was in reply to a 1911 question. The context of the paragraph was clearly only referring to 1911. You only picked out 1 sentence of the paragraph. The other 2 specifically referenced the 1911.
