I am looking to pick up a bolt gun in .270 Win to do some deer hunting down south. I have around $500 burning a hole in my pocket. Optic will be purchased separately later.

I was thinking of picking up a Rem 700 SPS, but I am looking for suggestions for alternatives in .270 Win.

    Thoughts? :dunno:

Ruger M77's are nice IMHO but for your price I would look at the Savage line. They have some very good priced package guns with Nikon BDC retical scopes for around 500 or less. Surf Budsgunshop and you can find quite a few. Also Marlin and Mossberg make decent bolt guns but they both are under rated. I have a friend in Montana that has a Tikka and he swears by it as well.

Any of them would be fine for deer.

    Good luck

i would narrow it down to savage or remington 700 off the top, then flip a coin between the 2.

then shoot me a pm/email and we will get you into a quality scope in your optics budget

I've got a Savage 111 in 270 win topped with a Wotac 4-14 x 50 and I love it. My vote would be for Savage but I wouldn't turn down a Rem 700. Both are great guns. Probably more options for the 700 if you wanted to mod it out later on down the road.

When i was stationed in Florida over by JAX I had a Howa Lightning in .270 that i had picked up at a pawn shop that my x-wife worked for. It had a Bushnell Banner Elite scope on it and was zeroed for 100yds off the wall of the pawnshop!

FYI-- Wally World has Remington 700's in .270 with a scope and rings for $415 !

I too would recommend the Savage. For the dollars, I don't think they can be beat.

You might watch the ads in the papers, Savage often throws out specials where you can get a rifle, scope (often bushnell or similar) and hardcase for resonable price.

I picked up a .243 Steven's a few years ago. Same rifle, just not the accu-trigger. Had plans to do a .243AI that never came together. Shoots great.

I just so happen to have one for sale that i have not listed in the classifieds yet.

    Here are some pics.

Its clean, comes w/ a leather sling, and 140 rounds of ammunition. the ammo is worth over a hundred and the gun comes w/ an extra mag.
650 takes it. Scope not included.

As you can see its not 100 percent, but its a hunting rifle none the less.

I have shot a 5 inch group at 500 yards w/ remington corlokt ammo, Vette was a witness to it.

witnessed, and probably 75% the reason i chose to give savage another shot. i tried one many years ago and it was ok, but no remington 700 for sure. after messing with yours i bought my savage and like it pretty well.

the other 25% was a mix between internet reviews and your ba

I don't know what the current 'street price' is, but the .270 in a Winchester model 70 is a classic combination (any Jack O'Conner fans here?).

There is one for sale in the classifieds right now. IMO, a very fair price.

Edit to add, I see Indygunworks already told you about it. If you don't jump on that deal....I don't know what else to say. I would if I didn't already own a Rem 721 in .270. I don't need two.

Hit your local pawn shops. I picked up a nice, older model M70 Winchester in .270 before I shot the throat and bore out with a combination of high round count (thousands and thousands), general disregard and disdain, slamming it around and at a few points, using the empty Winnie to strike a target at close range. It kept taking the beating and still turned out a decent 1.5-2 MOA with garbage ammo! :)

IndyGunworks thanks, I am really looking for one with a synthetic stock.

gunman41mag,I don't know. I really just have my heart set on a .270. Looking at the ballistics they seem very similar at the ranges I am looking at.

I'll have take a look/touch at savage and see how I like them. Thanks for the suggestions.

Why synthetic stock? This rifle is fully free floated so moisture and temperature will not cause a POI change. I have shot it in both 30-40 somthings weather all the way up to 70 somethings and my zero was w/in 3/4 MOA of POA.

If you are worried about dings and such, then thats a differant story, but for the price i dont think you should be concerned about dents and dings.

Feel free to come out and take a look at it. Unless "inside the loop" means FT wayne not indy
