Hey all just thought I would hit everyone up for their most accurate 30-06 loads! Im working with a winchester mod 70. I have 190 gn matchkings,150gn combined technologies ballistic silvertips(Nosler), 150 & 180 grain Hornady interbond. Just trying to see if someone here could save me a little time on load developement by getting me started in the right direction from the beginning. Thanks folks

FA M72 brass, CCI 200 primer, 130 TSX w/moly, 58.5 grains Reloader 22. Gives me 3290 fps out of a 25" 3 groove barrel, throated short.

Same brass and primer, 155 Scenar w/moly, 55.5 grains Reloader 22. 3045 fps from a factory Sako L61.

Both loads are topped out for their particular rifle. My favorite thing about reloading for 30-06 is turning loaded M72 into spent brass with a Garand.

If you hunt, here is the load that is sub-moa in a Browning A-bolt. Barnes Triple X 168 grns bullets, 56 grains IMR4350, Lake City Mil brass, OAL 3.18

I say, "if" you hunt because Barnes copper bullets are not cheap, but excellent as a game stopper.

Some of the powders I currently have are IMR 4350, AA 2520, Varget, IMR 3031, H-335, IMR-4831, RL-7, H-380, FWIW

Of the powders you listed, I'm going to say that your best bet is Varget, unless you're using it through a powder measure, then I'd recommend the H4350 in a short barrel or H4831 in a longer barrel.

Reason being, first, these are the 'extreme' powders on your list, and you won't have a change in impact point / velocity when the seasons change. This will allow you to load in the winter and shoot in the summer with the same resulting impact point.

Second, Varget is an excellent powder, very predictable, but not too good through a 'bar-type' powder measure found on most progressive presses. The charges tend to vary too much. If you're measuring by hand, then go with the Varget.

If you're using a short barrel, go with the faster H4350. Longer barrels, try the 4831.

Appropriate bullets are your choice completely.

Good luck - post results when you can. :)

Aszerigan thanks! I do notice my loading manuals dont list varget for use in bullet weights past 165gn. Now im not saying ya can't use it just not listed. MY thinking is it must be a lil on the fast side for these heavier bullets. Do you have any good data on Varget in the 180 190 class bullets?

Also i Have IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 NOT HODGDON. maybe I should've purchased Hodgdon though huh?

I'll be following this thread as well. My next purchase will be an encore in 30-06, if only because my Garand is going to be generating copious amounts of brass and i'm hesitant to shoot it through a gas gun more than three or so firings.

Although - I won't be looking at long range hunting loadings - I have a 7mm for that if necessary. I'll be focusing on 150 and 180 gr round noses, stoutly loaded for woods ranges of 150 yrds or less.

All of that being said - rimfire_crazed's oft repeated and seldom followed advice. You're not going to find the magic bullet loading on an internet forum. You'll find the perfect load with lots well thought out component selection, careful load development, and most important -GOOD SHOOTING TECHNIQUE!

My Browning A-Bolt really likes 150gr Hornady Interbonds over 58gr of IMR4350. It also likes 165gr Sierra Game Kings over 46gr of 2520AA.
